Career Information

The Oak Bay Police Department is an equal opportunity employer and from time to time recruits men and women for actual or forecasted police officer vacancies.  Administered by chief constable and deputy chief constable, the Oak Bay Police Department supports minority representation and gender equity. The selection criteria used is consistent with the Attorney General of B.C. Police Services recommendations and standards and also complies with both the spirit and intent of the provincial human rights legislation.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 19 years.
  • No criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
  • Valid basic first aid certificate and CPR.
  • Canadian Citizen or landed immigrant
  • Visual acuity must be no poorer than 20/40, 20/100 uncorrected and 20/20, 20/30 corrected.  Applicants having corrective laser surgery must wait six months from time of surgery before applying.
  • Must have completed at least two years post-secondary education or equivalent.
  • Valid drivers license, with a driving record reflecting responsible driving habits.
  • Computer skills and keyboarding ability.
  • Demonstrated fit and healthy lifestyle.
  • Meet the medical requirements of the Oak Bay Police Department.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the community through volunteer experience.
  • Maturity derived from varied life experience.
  • Demonstrated responsibility, initiative, creativity and problem solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to people whose culture, lifestyle or ethnicity is different than your own.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully undergo an extensive background investigation involving workplace, personal, financial and neighborhood enquiries.

Selection Process

The following is a general overview of the Oak Bay Police Department’s recruitment process:

  1. Submission of resume and covering letter
  2. Invitation to write recruit examination
  3. Physical testing
  4. Screening interview
  5. Peer panel interview
  6. Invitation to attend the Assessment Centre at the B.C. Police Academy in New Westminster at your expenses.
  7. Background investigation
  8. Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constable interview
  9. Medical examination conducted by your physician at your expense.
  10. Offer of employment.

Please note that each step depends on successful performance in the preceding stages.

In order to be considered as an exemption candidate you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current serving regular member of a Canadian police department, or have been a serving member of a Canadian police department during the preceding 36 months.
  • Have had minimum of 3 years service with a Canadian police department whose training and standards are equivalent to those of a British Columbia municipal police force.
  • Possess the knowledge, skills and experience equivalent to that of the British Columbia Peace Officer’s Basic training program at the Justice Institute of British Columbia.

A complete application for an exemption candidate must include:

  • Certificates verifying basic police training
  • All certificates of police related training
  • Two letters from present or previous supervisors indicating abilities as a police officer.
  • Performance appraisals for the last 3 years, longer if possible
  • Three examples of police investigations conducted, for example, impaired driving, and break and enter

Process for Exemption Candidates:

  1. Police Officer’s Physical Abilities Test (P.O.P.A.T.)
  2. B.C. Provincial Exemption Exam*
  3. Interview with the Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constable
  4. Peer Panel Interview
  5. Medical Examination at your expense
  6. Background Investigation

*Members serving on a B.C. municipal police force who were trained at the Justice Institute of British Columbia, or members of the RCMP who have spent a minimum of 2 years serving in B.C., are not required to take the exemption exam.

It is important to note that successful completion of the exemption process is not a guarantee of employment with the Oak Bay Police Department.

Tuition Fees

In 2002 recruits who are selected for employment will be required to pay $7,200.00 in tuition fees to the J.I.B.C.  In 2003 the proposed tuition fees  to be paid by the applicant, will rise to $9,500.00.

While attending the J.I.B.C., the recruit candidate receives:
