Oak Bay Motor Vehicle Accident

On November 22, 2018 shortly after 8:00 pm Oak Bay Police were called to a scene of a single vehicle motor vehicle accident in the 2000 block of Beach Dr.  Upon attendance it was confirmed that a 24 year old male driver was attempting to pass a vehicle at which time he lost control of the vehicle.  The pavement was wet at the time.  The vehicle crossed the oncoming lane before it jumped the curb, glanced off a tree, continued through a hedge and eventually struck a house.  In the process, the natural gas meter on the house was damaged and natural gas was escaping.  The Oak Bay Fire Department were dispatched and evacuated approximately 5 homes in the area until Fortis BC could attend and repair the natural gas system.

There was one passenger in the vehicle along with the driver and both occupants were reported to have minor injuries primarily related to being pushed against the  seatbelts they were wearing.

Impairment was not a factor however speed and road conditions were.  The driver was issued a violation ticket for offences under the BC Motor Vehicle Act including Driving With Undue Care and Attention and failure to display a New Driver Sign.  The vehicle was not drivable and was towed.  There is damage to the house at a level yet to be fully assessed.  No one in the home was injured.  The Emergency Service Responders cleared the scene just after 11:00 pm and all evacuated persons were able to return to their homes.
