OBPD Weekly Media Release September 3, 2012

News Release

Weekly Media Release.

Members of the Oak Bay Police Department attended 89 calls for service in this last week. Among those calls were six instances of “theft from auto”, remarkable due to the fact that one of them involved a “forced entry”. A tool had been used to pry the underside of the door handle affording access to the locking mechanism. A large amount of coin was taken from the vehicle.

By way of update regarding the stolen Honda Odyssey mentioned in last week’s release, the vehicle was recovered in the 2300 block of Quadra Street on September 6. It had sustained significant damage prior to being located. The investigation is ongoing.

On September 3rd, police responded to the University of Victoria for the report of two bikes that had been stolen. Each bike was worth approximately $600 and had been left unlocked. While some locks are easily cut, even the most basic lock can help prevent the theft of your bike. Whether you’re riding your bike to elementary school of university, police would like to remind you to keep it secure.

On September 6, just after midnight, police responded to the Oak Bay Recreation Centre where a 22 year old male was reporting the theft of his iPhone. The male had done the right thing by locking his effects in a locker. Unfortunately, in the short time between exiting the pool, opening the locker, and having a shower, the theft still occurred. Police will be analyzing the video tapes from the recreation centre lobby to try and identify a suspect.

On September 6, around 8:00am, police responded to the 2000 block of Newton Street. Residents there had awoke to find that their home had been entered overnight. The point of entry was through an unlocked patio door or unlocked mudroom door. The items stolen (electronics) were readily accessible in the kitchen just inside the doors. That investigation continues.

The return of the nice weather resulted in police being called to Willows Beach on both September 6 (5:30pm) and September 8 (9:30pm) to deal with people openly consuming liquor. Violation tickets for consuming in public were handed out to a 25 year old male and a 23 year old male. A large quantity of beer and spirits were seized. The fine for consuming liquor in public is $230.

Also on September 6th, around 11:00pm, police stopped a vehicle on Foul Bay Road. The 59 year old female driver had been drinking and a roadside screening device was administered. The result of the breath sample warranted a three day driving suspension.
