Weekly Media Release April 30-May 6

On April 30th at approximately 4am, the police responded to a motor vehicle accident in the 2300 block of Middowne Road. The driver hit an unoccupied parked vehicle and upon police arrival, the male attempted to flee on foot.  Officer’s gave chase and a quick foot pursuit ensued. The driver was arrested a few blocks away. The driver was impaired and was issued a 90-day IRP and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was unlicensed and he was issued violations tickets for “No Driver’s licence, “Drive Without Due Care” and “Fail to Provide his Name”.

On May 1st, the Oak Bay Police Department set up a roadblock in the 3500 block of Henderson Road. A vehicle was stopped and a strong odour of burnt cannabis was detected. The officer conducted a Standard Field Sobriety Test and the driver performed poorly. The driver was issued a 24-hour Suspension (by drug) and his vehicle was towed from the roadway.

During the same roadblock, another vehicle was stopped for an impaired investigation. The driver was issued a 24-hour suspension for liquor consumption.

On May 2nd, the police received a report of a stolen bicycle from Oak Bay High School. The suspect cut the lock and stole the bike from the bicycle racks. The bicycle is described as:

On May 3rd at approximately 7:30 am, the Oak Bay Police Department received an anonymous call of a deceased male in a pickup truck behind an apartment building in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Avenue. Members attended and found the male slumped over in the driver’s seat of a white truck. The male woke up when officers attended and he exited the vehicle on his own. The investigation continued and the officers confirmed that the truck was stolen from Langford and the attached licence plates were stolen from another truck in Saanich. The driver was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property x2.  A tele-bail hearing was conducted in the afternoon and the male was remanded in custody for morning court on May 5th.  The male was released with several strict court imposed conditions.

On May 4th, another bicycle was stolen from Oak Bay High School. The bicycle was once again locked in the bicycle rack and the suspect cut the lock and stole the bicycle.

On May 4th at approximately 5 am, the Oak Bay Police Department responded to a commercial B&E in the 2800 block of Foul Bay Road. The suspect threw a projectile through the front window and stole money from the unlocked register. Video surveillance of the suspect has been obtained and the Forensic Identification Section attended to assist with the investigation. The file is still under investigation.

On May 5th, a roadblock was set up in the 2300 block of Cedar Hill Cross Road. An impaired driver was stopped and issued a 3-day IRP and the vehicle was towed from the roadway. The driver was issued a violation ticket for driving contrary to his Class 7 (New Driver) driver’s licence.

On May 6th, officers were on patrol when they observed a vehicle speeding on Henderson Rd.  Officers pulled the vehicle over and observed a child in the back of the vehicle unrestrained.  Violation ticket was issued for speeding and for having a Child unrestrained in a motor vehicle.
