Chief Constable Ray Bernoties
Welcome to the Oak Bay Police Department’s information page. Oak Bay is like paradise and the members of this department are fortunate to serve such a supportive community. Make no mistake, our residents have very high expectations and we wouldn’t want it any other way.
Oak Bay enjoys a reputation as being one of the safest communities in Canada. The department provides a proactive service through a team of dedicated police officers, civilian support staff and volunteers. Our style of policing is compassionate, patient and respectful and our size and place in this community allows us to address problems holistically as opposed to simply enforcing laws. We pride ourselves on the ability to tailor our activities to local conditions while remaining agile enough to respond to changing needs.
We work closely with other social service providers in order to get residents the appropriate help they need given their unique circumstances. We routinely check in on people later to ensure their wellbeing and “going the extra mile” is the norm for our members.
We receive a great deal of positive feedback from residents who observe our members performing their duties. Often they are surprised to see how caring officers are to people who may be angry with them. I’m not surprised at all as this manner of policing is simply what we call “The Oak Bay Way”.
I’m very proud of the women and men of the Oak Bay Police Department and I am honoured to serve them and my community as the Chief of Police.
