The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 146 calls for service this week.

Break and Enter to Business.

On Tuesday October 31, 2023, at 8:15am, the Oak Bay Police Department responded to a report of a break and enter to a business in the 3000 block of Finnerty Rd. Security reported that sometime overnight someone had broken into the storage locker behind the business. The suspect cut the lock to the storage locker and rummaged through some items. No CCTV was available at this location. Security determined that two hand carts were missing from the storage locker.  (OB2023-3304)

Fraud

On Wednesday November 1, 2023, at 1:57pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of an online fraud. The resident reported receiving multiple emails regarding suspicious activity on their credit card. The resident called the 1-800 number on one of the emails they received and spoke with someone claiming to be from the credit card company.  During the conversation the resident provided the “representative” with account information. The resident provided the “representative” with further information to another banking institution and allowed them access to their TD Canada Trust account. This investigation is still under investigation and the full amount of loss has not been determined.  (OB2023-3322)

The Oak Bay Police Department receives several reports a month regarding various types of fraud including online and over the phone activity. Residents are reminded that reputable banking services and credit card companies do not typically contact clients via email or phone to confirm banking information. If ever in doubt the public is encouraged to attend their bank branch in person to verify any requests for information or account activity. 

Excessive Speed

On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at approximately 4:15pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement near Beach Dr. and Newport Ave. A 24-year-old woman was stopped for going 81 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed (Section 148(1) MVA), in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days.  (OB2023-3326)

On Friday, November 3, 2023, at approximately 11:40pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement near Cedar Hill Cross Rd and Crestview Rd. A 17-year-old man was stopped for going 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed (Section 148(1) MVA), in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OB2023-3352)

On Friday, November 4, 2023, at approximately 7:35pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement near Beach Dr. and Newport Ave. A 22-year-old man was stopped for going 105 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive (Speed Section 148(1) MVA), in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OB2023-3364)

On Friday, November 4, 2023, at approximately 8:22pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement near Beach Dr. and Newport Ave. A 55-year-old man was stopped for going 95 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed (Section 148(1) MVA). in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OB2023-3365)

On Friday, November 4, 2023, at approximately 11:37pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement near Cedar Hill Cross Rd and Crestview Rd. A 21-year-old man was stopped for going 139 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed (Section 148(1) MVA), in the amount of $368 and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days. (OB2023-3367)
