April 23rd, 2012 Weekly Media Release

During the week of April 16th to 22nd, 2012 Oak Bay Police responded to 86 calls for service.

On April 16th Oak Bay Police responded to a theft from motor vehicle which occurred over night in the 2800 block of Beach Drive. A list of missing property is still forthcoming from the owner.

On April 16th Oak Bay Police responded to a theft from motor vehicle which occurred over night in the 2500 block of Beach Drive. The vehicle had been left unlocked and a pair of sunglasses stolen.

On April 16th Oak Bay Police responded to a theft from motor vehicle which occurred over night in the 2700 block of Lincoln Rd. The vehicle had been left unlocked and loose change, 2 Volcom snowboard jackets, a pair of pants, an ipod, DVD’s and CD’s were stolen. Value of the theft exceeded $1500.00.

On April 16th Oak Bay Police responded to a complaint from a citizen who had parked her car shortly after 1:00pm behind the HSBC bank. The owner was only a short distance away when a male was observed entering her unlocked vehicle and began searching through the automobile. The owner yelled out and the male ran off. Nothing was stolen.

On April 16th Oak Bay Police responded to a theft from motor vehicle which occurred over night in a secure underground parking lot in the 1400 block of Beach Drive. The vehicle had been left unlocked and a belt, shirt and loose change were stolen.

On April 17th Oak Bay Police responded to a vehicle theft from the 2100 block of Sutherland Rd. A 1993 grey Honda Civic was stolen. Unique identifying features include bright purple aluminum rims and brightly coloured Japanese stickers covering the entire front lip of the car. All keys for the car were accounted for. The investigation is continuing.

On April 18th Oak Bay Police responded to a theft from motor vehicle which occurred over night in the 2800 block of Somass Drive. The vehicle had been left unlocked and a small amount of change stolen.

On April 18th Oak Bay Police responded to a complaint of a motor vehicle in the 2300 block of Oak Bay Ave which had been rummaged through over night. Nothing was stolen.
As can be seen by the rash of vehicle entries and despite repeated warnings by police, many citizens still do not lock their vehicles and/or ensure valuables are removed when left unattended. An unlocked vehicle enables easy access for persons seeking out thefts of opportunity. Leaving articles inside an unattended vehicle is an invitation for theft. Please lock your vehicle at all times and do not leave any valuables in an unattended vehicle.

On April 18th a citizen turned over two medals that were found near the intersection of Oak Bay Avenue and Monterey Avenue. The two medals are from a swimming event held in Winnipeg in 1967. There are descriptive markings on the medals and the owner may contact the Oak Bay Police to provide details of the markings to confirm ownership.

On April 19th Oak Bay Police attended to an injury motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Cadboro Bay Rd and Bowker Avenue. A 23 yr old Victoria woman was operating a 2004 Jeep station wagon west bound on Bowker Avenue. The driver, in possession of a class 7 “New Driver” licence, stopped at the stop sign at Cadboro Bay Rd and then began a left turn. The driver turned in front of an oncoming north bound vehicle on Cadboro Bay Rd. The north bound vehicle was a 2005 Mazda pickup being operated by a 29 yr old Victoria woman. The driver of the pick-up was transported to Victoria General Hospital by ambulance for minor facial injuries. The 23 yr old driver of the Jeep was issued two violation tickets, one for Failing to Yield after stopping at a stop sign, and the other for operating a motor vehicle without an “N” sticker as required by the conditions of her driver’s licence.

On April 22nd Oak Bay Police attended to a report of theft from a boat at the Oak Bay Marina. Stolen were two “Scotty” down riggers that had been left mounted but locked on the boat. The down riggers are black in colour and worth a total of $1500.00.
