The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 100 calls for service this past week.

1 May 2023 – Warrant of Arrest Executed (File 2023-1159)

On the 1st of May OBPD received an arrest warrant from BC Probation for a youth who was on conditions to be under bail supervision after committing an assault and causing property damage to the family home in April 2023. The youth failed to comply with his conditions and as a result OBPD located and arrested the youth who was remanded into the custody of a youth detention center for supervision.

2 May 2023 – Collision over $10,000 (File 2023-1166)

On the 2nd of May OBPD attended the scene of a multiple vehicle accident near Thompson Ave. Witnesses report an elderly driver appeared to have been driving faster than the posted speed limit and crashed into two parked cars.  Damage has been reported to be more than $10,000.00. No one was injured.  The driver was charged with driving with undue care and attention (Sec. 144 (1)(a) of the Motor Vehicle Act $368.00 fine).  The driver was taken to Royal Jubilee Hospital as a precaution for a medical assessment. A driver’s licence review will be requested.

4 May 2023 – Unlicensed Driver 3-day IRP (File 2023-1186)

On the 4th of May, while conducting traffic enforcement, an OBPD Officer stopped a vehicle for speeding near the intersection of Foul Bay Rd and Newton Rd.  The 21-year-old male “N” driver  did not have a valid Driver’s License to produce and had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening. The driver provided a breath sample roadside and subsequently “blew a warn” on  an Approved Screening Device, and as a result the driver was issued a 3-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition. The Driver’s vehicle was towed and impounded for 3 days. The man was issued violation tickets for speeding ($196), fail to display “N” ($109), and Drive Contrary to Restrictions ($109) under the Motor Vehicle Act.

4 May 2023 – Excessive Speed (File 2023-1201)

On the 4th of May, while conducting traffic enforcement, a driver on Beach Drive near the Victoria Golf Club was stopped for going 82km/hr. in a posted 40km/hr. zone. The driver was issued a violation ticket for Excessive Speeding ($368.00 148(1) MVA), Drive Contrary to Conditions (25(15) MVA $109.00) and Fail to Display “N” (30.10 MVAR  $109.00). The vehicle the 20- year-old woman was driving was towed and impounded for 7 days.

7 May 2023 – Bylaw- Beach Fire (File 2023-1236)

On the 7th of May, at approximately 10:00PM, OBPD members on patrol observed a large fire on the beach in the 900 Block of Beach Drive. A group of 10 youths were found having a beach Fire. The youths were cautioned and made to extinguish the fire before being removed from the area which was private property.

OBPD would like to remind everyone that open flame fires are prohibited on the beach areas. If you would like to enjoy a fire with friends and family a propane style fire pit is bylaw compliant.
