This is the media release for the week of October 7 – October 13, 2024. The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 77 calls for service this week.
Immediate Roadside Prohibition
On October 11, 2024, at 10:28 pm, the Oak Bay Police conducted a road check on Oak Bay Ave near Elgin Ave targeting impaired drivers. A 28-year-old man drove up to the road check. Police detected an odour of alcohol on the man’s breath. The Approved Screening Device Demand was made to the man. The man provided a suitable breath sample into a roadside screening device and the subsequent reading was a Warn, indicating that the man’s blood alcohol level was between 60 – 99 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The man was issued a 3-day Immediate Driving Prohibition, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 3 days. (OB File 24-2826)
Excessive Speed
On October 12, 2024, at 12:55 am, the Oak Bay Police conducted speed enforcement in the 2900 block of Foul Bay Rd. Police observed a Northbound 2024 BMW I4 and visually estimated the vehicle to be travelling 110km/h in a 50km/h zone. A LIDAR speed device was used to capture the vehicle’s speed, and it was noted to be travelling 116km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as an 18-year-old male with a Novice driver’s licence. The teenager was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed Section 148(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act, with a fine of $483, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB File 24-2828)
Theft of Vehicle
On October 13, 2024, the Oak Bay Police responded to a report of a theft of vehicle from the 2000 block of Bowker Ave. The complainant stated that sometime overnight, someone stole his pickup truck from their parking spot. On October 14, 2024, around midnight, the Victoria Police Department advised that they had located the stolen pick-up truck parked in a parking lot. The vehicle was towed to the Saanich Police Department and will be forensically examined. The matter is still under investigation. (OB File 24-2846)
