Weekly Media Release

On April 21, the Victoria Police requested our assistance in locating a stolen auto that was last seen north bound on Hampshire Road. An Oak Bay Police officer observed the vehicle going north on Monterey at a high rate of speed. Unfortunately the police member was going the opposite way and lost sight of the vehicle. Witnesses came forward and pointed the member in the right direction and the abandoned vehicle was eventually located in the 2100 block of Esplanade. A Victoria Police K9 Unit was brought in to locate the driver. A 43 year old male, the driver of the stolen vehicle, was identified and arrested a short time later in the 2600 block of Cranmore Rd by VicPD officers.

On April 23, an Oak Bay resident received a phone call from a male who claimed to be a “Windows Support” technician. The resident became suspicious of the male and turned off her computer before providing any information. Residents should be aware that this computer anti-virus scam still exists in different forms and at no time should you allow the downloading of third party software or remote access to your computer.

On April 24, an Oak Bay bylaw enforcement member observed a parked vehicle using BC license plates which didn’t correspond with the vehicle they were attached to. An Oak Bay Police member attended the location and confirmed the observation of the bylaw member. The vehicle plates were seized and the vehicle was towed away for not being properly insured.

On April 27th wallet and cell phone were reported stolen from an unlocked locker at the Oak Bay Recreation Center.  This serves as a reminder that all valuables at the recreation center need to be secured. The incident is still being investigated.

Sometime overnight on the 26th/27th an unlocked vehicle parked in the 1600 block of Yale Street was entered and rifled through. Fortunately nothing significant was removed other than a small amount of change. No suspects have been identified.

Also at some point overnight someone painted the phrase “F**k the police” followed by a heart symbol in red paint on the lacrosse box located in Carnarvon Park and additional graffiti was located in a baseball dug out. Other graffiti was found when a racist phrase was located on a wall near the Oak Bay High School track facility. No suspects in either case at this point. Inquiries with other local agencies are being made to determine if similar graffiti has been noted in the region.
