On July 25th, a female flag-person was directing traffic on Foul Bay Road at Middowne Road when she was struck by an older Oldsmobile being driven by an elderly lady. The flag-person did not initially believe she was injured and so directed the vehicle over to the proper travel lane and away. On July 27 2013 at 9 o’clock in the morning Oak Bay Police Officers located an abandoned beach fire on Willows Beach near Bowker Ave. There were still areas of open flame on the remaining bits of wood. It was obvious to officers that it had been a very hot fire due to the radiant heat from the sand and rocks. It appeared that no attempt had been made to put out the fire by whomever had lit it. Oak Bay Fire attended and extinguished the fire with buckets of water. Other than the obvious risk to property and structures a fire poses during this period of hot, dry weather, the public needs to remember that our beaches are enjoyed by many people, including pets and small children. The heat from this fire extended over an area of 1 square meter. It took at least 7 large buckets of water to cool the beach enough that the water stopped instantly boiling on contact. One can only imagine what injuries would have resulted had a child stepped in this area. Please enjoy the outdoor opportunities our municipality has to offer but do so with consideration towards others.

On July 27th, police received a report of an internet rental scam where the complainant may have lost $1200. The culprit places an advertisement for a rental apartment in one of the free sites (Used Victoria, Craigslist) using photos from a real estate listing. Then using an AOL or other such email address, requests rent be sent to another country, in this case the U.K. Once the money is wired, it is very difficult to get back. Police recommend that you meet the person face to face or use a trusted property management company before handing over any money. This fraud is taking place across Canada and is a variation on similar frauds perpetrated worldwide.

On July 28th, police received a report of theft from vehicle that occurred sometime since Friday, the 26th in the 2000 block of Kings Road. A Macbook laptop, Ipad and a Kindle E-reader were stolen.
