In early November an Oak Bay resident complained to police that unknown persons had accessed his air miles and used them to book a two night stay at a local hotel. It was determined that the Hotel booking was done on-line through a travel agency located outside the country. After doing a credit check on himself, the resident learned that someone had opened an account in Surrey in his wife’s name. The complainant and police were at a loss as to how this person’s pass word protected air miles and personal information could have been accessed.
Subsequent to this complaint, on an unrelated investigation, West Shore RCMP and the Regional Crime Unit conducted a search of a Colwood residence. Seized from the residence was personal identification information belonging to the Oak Bay Resident. The personal information seized included Aeroplan account numbers and PIN, Air miles account number and password, British Airways Executive Club account numbers and PIN, Royal Bank Visa Account number and PIN. 28 year old Derek Fast of Colwood was charged with Identity Theft in relation to this investigation.
Police contacted the Oak Bay resident and gave him the list of his personal identification information that had been retrieved from the Colwood residence. Upon reviewing the information the Oak Bay resident realized that all of the information had been on his Ipod that had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle in 2010.
This is a sober reminder to Oak Bay residents never leave valuables unattended, and to lock vehicles when unattended.
On November 25 at approximately 8:30 pm, Oak Bay Police were called to an accident at the corner of Mitchell Street and Oak Bay Avenue. Witnesses advised that a vehicle described as a green Izuzu Trooper, was driving eastbound on Oak Bay Avenue and had hit a light standard. Witnesses then advised that the vehicle drove one block further east to Yale Street where it was parked. A male driver and female passenger were seen exiting the vehicle and walking back westbound along Oak Bay Avenue.
Police attended and located the male and female a short distance away. Both were taken into custody for leaving the scene of an accident.
Investigation showed that the Izuzu Trooper received extensive damage to the front end and had to be towed from the scene. The lamp post was sheared in half and had wires showing. This was made safe by on call municipal workers and firemen.
The 27 year old male driver was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act with Driving with undue care and consideration. Neither the driver nor the 40 year old female passenger were injured in the collision.
