Weekly Media Release August 31-September 6, 2015

On September 3rd at 1:10 am a couple were asleep in their residence on Thompson Ave when they were awakened by the sound of breaking glass. The husband checked the residence but did not observe anything unusual and went back to bed. Approximately one hour later the couple were again awakened, this time by someone shining a flashlight into their bedroom. The suspect immediately fled the house and police were called via 911. Police located a broken window in the rear back door. A Victoria police dog was deployed and followed a strong scent out into the back alley but the suspect was not located. Saanich PD Forensic Identification Section attended to conduct an examination of the scene. Police are continuing their investigation.

On September 3rd at approx. 8:00 am police were conducting speed enforcement on Cadboro Bay Road using a laser speed measuring device. An officer pointed the laser at a speeding vehicle and the laser indicated that a jamming device was being detected. Officers stopped the speeding motorist and confirmed that the vehicle had jamming devices installed in both the front and rear of the vehicle. Sec 4(4) of the Radio Communications Act states, “No person shall install, use, possess, manufacture, import, distribute, lease or offer for sale or sell a jammer”. The driver was given a vehicle inspection order to remove and surrender the device to police.

On September 3rd at approx. 9:00 pm police attended to a residence on McNeill Ave concerning a disturbance. Investigation revealed that a female had breached her court ordered conditions to abstain from consuming alcohol and to refrain from having contact with her husband. The female had attended to his residence, entered the house and became combative with her husband and teenaged son while under the influence of alcohol. Police arrested the female and she was held in custody for a bail hearing.

On September 4th at 1:50 am police observed a vehicle travelling northbound at a high rate of speed in the 2900 block of Beach Drive. The vehicle tried to elude police but was observed trying to back up on to Valdez Place with no lights on. Police approached the vehicle and began speaking with the driver at which point he ran off. While pursuing the driver on foot, police noticed he dropped the keys to the vehicle and his wallet while running. Police seized the items and were able to identify the driver. The motor vehicle was impounded and the driver attended later in the day to the police station at which point he was issued three violation tickets and an Appearance Notice for Driving While Prohibited.

On September 4th at approx. 9:30 pm police stopped a motor vehicle on Beach Drive by Goodwin Street and detected the odour of liquor on the breath of the 59 year old female driver. A roadside screening test was administered resulting in a 24 hr driving suspension being issued to the driver.

On September 4th at approx. 11:00 pm police stopped a motor vehicle on Henderson Rd near Arden and discovered the odour of liquor on the breath of the 61 year old male driver. A roadside screening test was administered resulting in a 3 day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition and a 3 day vehicle impoundment.

On September 5th at approx. 2:50 am police stopped a motor vehicle that was having trouble parallel parking on Foul Bay Rd. The 20 year old female driver had the odour of liquor on her breath. A roadside screening test was administered resulting in a 90 day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition and a 30 day vehicle impoundment.

On September 5th at 6:00 pm police responded to a complaint of a residential break and enter where entry had been made by breaking the glass of the front door. The residence had been unoccupied for some time suggesting the break and enter may not have been recent. Stolen were various items of jewellery. Police seized articles of evidentiary value and forwarded them to Saanich Forensic Identification Section for further examination. Police continue their investigation.

On September 6th at 12:20 am an Oak Bay police officer was assisting Saanich Police by conducting traffic control at the scene of an accident at the intersection of Foul Bay Road and Lansdowne Rd. While conducting traffic control, a motor vehicle being driven by a 59 year old female pulled up and an odour of liquor was detected on the driver’s breath. A roadside screening test was administered resulting in a 3 day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition.
