Weekly Media Release for June 2-8, 2014

On June 2nd shortly after midnight an officer stopped a GMC Yukon for speeding on Cadboro Bay Road near Foul Bay Road. The vehicle struck the curb while pulling over and the driver tried putting the transmission into park while the vehicle was still in motion. The driver displayed symptoms of alcohol consumption and a demand was made for a breath test into an approved screening device at roadside. The driver refused and was subsequently issued an immediate 90 day Roadside Prohibition from driving and his GMC Yukon was impounded for 30 days.

On June 3rd at 11:00 am an alert citizen at the Oak Bay Marina observed a male in possession of a boat motor that belonged to his neighbour. The suspect took the motor to his sailboat which was moored off the marina. Police were summoned and while heading out towards the sailboat, the suspect tossed the motor overboard.  Diver’s subsequently recovered the stolen motor and the suspect was arrested and issued an Appearance Notice for court on a charge of Possession of Stolen Property.

On June 3rd at 6:40 pm a male was operating a motorcycle southbound on Beach Drive in the 2500 block. Police observed the motorcycle to be travelling at a high rate of speed with the officer estimating the speed at 110 kmh in the 50 kmh zone. The motorcycle entered the 40 kmh zone and continued at a similar speed. Over the course of the next minute, the motorcycle drove through congested traffic with vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians in the area. It passed through 9 cross walks, passed a playground, an elementary school, and a popular beach/park area. The driver was extremely fortunate a serious accident did not occur. The driver was charged with excessive speeding and his motorcycle was impounded for 7 days.

On June 4th at 8:00 am a resident residing in the 2000 block of Newton Street noticed their vehicle had been stolen from in front of their residence. Inside the SUV had been left a set of Taylor Made golf clubs valued at $2000.00. The vehicle has not yet been recovered and the investigation continues.

On June 8th at 6:15 pm an employee working at a booth at the Oak Bay Tea Party was accepting payment for a product purchased by a male. The customer handed over money that the employee immediately recognized as being counterfeit. Police patrolling the fairgrounds attended and arrested the man. Police seized a total of $1735.00 comprised of both legitimate and counterfeit currency from the man. The investigation continues.

This year’s Oak Bay Tea Party was enjoyed by many residents all across the CRD. Police report being busy but had additional officers scheduled to work including the use of five police reserve constables who volunteered their time throughout the weekend.
