On June 20th, two thefts were reported from residences in Central Oak Bay. A gang box full of tolls was taken from one residence and two outboard motors were taken from another. The matters are still under investigation.
On June 20th, damage to light standards was reported to police along Beach Drive. The iconic globes, now made of plastic, were smashed and in one a large rock was placed in the shell. This required considerable effort and would have required the culprit(s) to stand on a ladder or a truck bed.
On June 22nd, shortly after midnight, police received a report of a group of youth walking down the path breaking things. Patrol discovered three broken light globes along Bowker Creek as well as garbage cans tipped over. Due to the frequency of this type of mischief, the globes may no longer be replaced. A fourth broken globe was discovered by Park staff later in the day.
On June 22nd, police received a related report of a rock thrown through a French door at a residence along Bowker Creek.
On June 24th, Oak Bay’s Detective, in cooperation with Victoria Police, recovered the First Nations art piece that had been stolen from UVIC. The piece appears to be relatively undamaged, though it will have to be examined by a curator. It is expected the piece will be turned over to the art gallery on Monday for examination before being returned to UVIC. The matter is still under investigation.
On June 26th, an Oak Bay Police officer on bicycle patrol was flagged down to assist with a fawn stuck in an iron gate. The member was able to squeeze the deer out from between the bars, with a concerned doe looking on, and free it uninjured.
