Weekly Media Release May 14, 2012

During this last week, Oak Bay Police Department responded to 102 calls for service. Of those calls, there was only one reported “Theft from Auto”.

On Monday morning, May 7, police responded to a report of a Break and Enter from a shop in the 2500 block of Estevan Avenue. The building had been entered sometime over the weekend and a computer was taken. There were no signs of forced entry to the building leaving police and the owner to speculate that the business may have inadvertently been left unlocked. There are no suspects.

Shortly after midnight on May 9th, a vehicle was observed travelling at 107km/h on Foul Bay Road. The 2007 Land Rover was stopped and the 26-year-old male driver was charged with “Excessive Speed”, fined $368 and had has vehicle impounded for seven days.

There have been several reports of the theft of downriggers from boats at the Oak Bay Marina and the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. These thefts have occurred over the last few weeks and police have no leads. Users of the marina, RVYC and surrounding areas are encouraged to report any suspicious activity that they may come across. With spring solidly upon us, members of the Oak Bay Police Department will be partnering with the RCMP Marine Unit to make patrols of our harbours, bays and shorelines.

Also with the change of weather, police are seeing the predictable increase in users of our fine beaches. The public is reminded that the Liquor Control and Licencing Act prohibits the consumption of liquor in public and that the fine associated is now $230. Also, dogs are prohibited on Willows Beach from May until the end of September.

The Oak Bay Half Marathon was held on May 13th on a beautiful Mother’s Day morning. Police received no complaints related to the race and would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding as we all worked together to ensure everyone could get to where they needed to be, racers and non-racers alike.
