Weekly Media Release May 29 – June 4, 2017

On May 29th at approximately 7:30 pm the Oak Bay Police responded to a three vehicle MVI in the 2800 block of Foul Bay Road. All three vehicles were driving southbound when the incident occurred. The lead vehicle signalled to make a right turn onto Allenby Street and came to a full stop when the driver observed a cyclist in her rear view mirror in the designated bicycle lane. The vehicle directly behind came to an abrupt stop and collided into the lead vehicle because the third vehicle rear-ended and pushed the middle vehicle into the lead vehicle that stopped for the cyclist.  The drivers did not sustain any injuries, however two of the vehicles were towed from the scene. The driver of the third vehicle that pushed the middle vehicle was served a violation ticket for Following too Closely, Section 162(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act with a prescribed fine of $109.00

On May 30th at approximately 4:30 pm in the 2100 block of Lansdowne Road the police responded to a two vehicle MVI with no injuries. The violator was startled when his phone rang and the driver accelerated and rear-ended the vehicle in front of him. Minor damage occurred to the vehicle that was hit and the violator was also issued a violation ticket for Following too Closely, Section 162(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act.

On May 31st, a roadblock was set up in the 1300 block of Beach Drive. The police officer smelled an odour of marijuana emanating form the interior of the vehicle. The police member conducted a Standard Field Sobriety Test on the driver and he passed the test without charges. The vehicle was searched pursuant to Controlled Drugs and Substance Act and the office seized 7 grams of marijuana. The driver was not criminally charged, however a police report was completed and the drugs were seized and destroyed.

On May 31st, a bicycle was reported stolen from the University of Victoria’s Engineering Building. The owner secured their bicycle to the bike rack and upon returning from their class later on in the evening the bicycle was gone. The owner provided the following description:

  • Light green/blue Lochside, brown leather seat and grips, electric cruiser, 7 speed, Value: $800.00

On June 2nd, the police received a report of theft from a vehicle in the 900 block of Foul Bay Road. The culprit forcibly punctured the drivers side door handle/lock. The interior of the vehicle was rummaged through.  However, nothing was stolen.

On June 2nd, the police responded to another two vehicle MVI without injuries in the 2100 block of Granite Street. The violator was backing up their vehicle from their driveway and did not see a vehicle driving eastbound on Granite Street. The violator caused significant damage to the entire passenger side of the other vehicle. Both vehicles were driveable.

On June 2nd, the police received another report of a vehicle being entered in the 900 block of Foul Bay Road. The front passenger side window was smashed and the thief stole only one item:

  • A pair of Serengeti sunglasses

On June 2nd, the police a third complaint of a theft from a vehicle in the 1200 block of Brighton Avenue. The vehicle was unlocked and rifled through and the contents were strewn about the interior. Nothing was stolen.

Between June 1st-3rd a $1500.00 tricycle was stolen from a bicycle rack located in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Avenue. The bicycle was secured with a chain to the bicycle rack.
