BC Gun Amnesty June 1-30, 2013

The BC Gun Amnesty will allow Oak Bay residents who have illegal or unwanted firearms, other weapons or ammunition the opportunity to voluntarily surrender them to the Oak Bay Police Department for safe disposal during the month of June.  During this time police will not recommend weapons related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply against people who are voluntarily contacting police and relinquishing these items to the police.  The immunity will not apply to those persons who, when detained or arrested, are found to be in possession of a weapon.

Residents interested in taking advantage of this opportunity are asked to call the Oak Bay Police Department at 592-2424 to make arrangements for an officer to attend their residence to pick up unwanted firearms, weapons or ammunition.  Residents are asked not to transport the items themselves to the police station.

The amnesty gives residents a safe way to dispose of weapons, imitation weapons, and related ammunition which they are not legally entitled to own, or which they may no longer want.  This is also an opportunity to ensure that unwanted weapons are properly disposed of.

During the 2006 gun amnesty in excess of 3,200 guns were turned into police including 505 handguns. http://tinyurl.com/ltpy9ml
