Esplanade Incident Update, April 27 2017

On April 25, 2017 shortly before 7:30 AM the Oak Bay Police responded to a 911 call

originating from a home in the 2500 block of Esplanade, near Willows Beach in Oak Bay.

Upon their arrival, police discovered a 45 year old woman, who was a resident of the

home, who had suffered significant injuries to her upper body. The woman was

transported by ambulance to the hospital and underwent surgery for her injuries. The

home has been the subject of heavy police presence since that 911 call was received as

the investigation into this incident continues.

On the evening of April 26, 2017, the woman was interviewed by the Detectives

assigned to this case. Police now know the following:

Shortly before 7:30 AM on April 25th the woman was in her home and heard noises

coming from the kitchen area. The woman went to investigate the noises and

discovered an unknown male in her kitchen. The woman confronted the unknown male

and an altercation took place resulting in the woman being struck several times with an

edged weapon, which may have been a machete.

The woman has provided the following description of the male who she encountered in

her home as follows:

White male, in his 20’s, wearing a brown jacket, khaki pants, and a blue and white

bandana.

By way of the service agreement that exists between the Oak Bay Police Department

and the Saanich Police Department, the Saanich Police Department Detective Division

have taken the lead role on this investigation.

There are a number of resources from both police departments dedicated to solving this

crime. These include officers from the Patrol Divisions of both departments, officers

from the Detective Division, Forensic Identification Section, and Intelligence Section of

the Saanich Police Department, and members from the Integrated Crowd Management

Unit.

The victim and her family are requesting privacy and do not wish to speak with any

media agencies at this time. If the wishes of the family change then we will advise the

media accordingly at that time.
