Media Release for August 31 – September 6, 2020

This week Oak Bay Police Department received multiple reports of drivers and cyclists disobeying traffic control flaggers directing traffic along Beach Drive. Fortunately, none of these incidents resulted in harm to flaggers or members of the public. To the driver who chose not to obey the flagger near the 2300 block of Beach Drive on September 2, 2020 at about 1:00pm, an Oak Bay police officer may be on your doorstep soon to issue a violation ticket. The fine amount for disobeying a flag-person is $196.00 (file 2020-2741).

Several 911 “hang up” calls were dispatched to Oak Bay Police this week. We are always pleased when there isn’t a true emergency related to the misdial, pocket dial or hang up of a 911 call. However, these unintentional incidents use valuable time and resources of our 911 dispatchers and police services. Please refrain from letting your children “play” with your cell phone and make sure your home screen is locked prior to placing your phone away or in your pocket. If a misdial should occur, please stay on the line and speak to the dispatcher so a “non-emergency” can be confirmed by police (file 2020-2711, 2733, 2765).

Thank you to our conscientious and caring community members who reported or turned in found property this week to Oak Bay Police Department. As a result, Oak Bay Police were able to return a purse to the owner after it was accidently left at a local Park. The purse was turned into Oak Bay Police (with all the contents) and the owner located and contacted a short time later (file 2020-2729).

On September 3, 2020 at 7:00pm, Oak Bay Police officers were conducting proactive patrols in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Avenue. During a walk through the common area of an apartment building officers located a set of “nun chucks” (a prohibited weapon as described in the Criminal Code of Canada). The weapon was seized and secured for disposal. No one was observed in the area at the time the weapon was located and seized. There are no suspect or witnesses related to this weapon file at this time (file 2020-2754).

The evening of September 3, 2020 at 8:00pm, Oak Bay Police responded to a mischief in progress at the 2900 block of Foul Bay Road. A man was observed by witnesses throwing a rock through the front window of a home, he uttered threats to the occupants and then fled in a van. The man, 22-year-old from Victoria, is known to the occupants of the home and not considered a threat to the public. The suspect was located and arrested by Nanaimo RCMP on behalf of the Oak Bay Police Department on September 6, 2020 in Nanaimo, British
Columbia. This matter is still under investigation (file 2020-2755).
