The Province is seeking applications to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Oak Bay Police Board. The closing date for applications is December 31, 2023. Interested parties can apply online on the BC Government website.
The current board consists of six members. The successful candidate would fill one of the existing seats as a current member reaches their maximum term of service of six years.
A person appointed to a municipal police board, holds office for a term, not longer than four years, and members are limited to a term of six consecutive years. New Board members are appointed to a one-year initial term to assess their fit and suitability. The board meets once a month on the fourth Tuesday of each month. Meetings are normally held in the evening beginning at 4:00 pm.
This is a volunteer position. Police board members may be reimbursed for any approved travelling and other out-of-pocket expenses incurred while serving in this role.
While previous experience as a director is not required, it is important that candidates understand the roles and responsibilities of a member of a board and have the necessary experience and demonstrated skills to enable them to contribute to board decision-making and oversight.

- Finance expertise
- Knowledge of government and the public sector environment and
- Cyber Security/Privacy and IT
All directors should possess the following personal attributes:

- appreciation of the responsibilities to the public;
- able and willing to raise potentially controversial issues in a manner that encourages dialogue;
- flexible, responsive and willing to consider others’ opinions;
- capable of a wide perspective on issues;
- ability to listen and work as a team member;
- no direct or indirect conflict of interest with the member’s responsibility to the organization;
- strong reasoning skills;
- able and willing to fulfill time commitment required to carry out responsibilities;
- may include personal attributes relevant to organization; and
- commitment to continuous learning about the organization and the relevant sector or industry.
