On January 30th, 2014 at approx.. 7:00pm Oak Bay Police investigated a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. A 75 yr old Victoria resident was operating her 2003 Toyota 4 Runner in a northerly direction on Cadboro Bay Road, approaching the intersection with Thompson Avenue. An 85 yr old Oak Bay male had just begun crossing Cadboro Bay Road in the crosswalk when he was struck by the motor vehicle. The pedestrian was transported to Victoria General Hospital with what was initially believed to be serious injuries but fortunately after treatment it was determined that he suffered only lacerations and bruising. He remained in hospital overnight for observation.
Police advise that neither speed or alcohol were factors in this collision. There was light rain falling at the time and the crosswalk, though marked, has no flashing lights and little in the way of lighting. Interestingly, this same pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in the very same crosswalk in November of 2012. On that occasion the pedestrian was also transported to hospital but only had minor injuries.
A traffic analyst from Saanich was called to assist and the investigation continues.
