Weekly Media Release April 14-20, 2014

Motor Vehicle Incidents:

On April 14th police received a complaint of a Hit & Run that had occurred sometime between 8:00-11:00 am on April 9th, 2014.  The complainant reports their vehicle had been struck while parked in the parking lot of the Oak Bay Recreation Centre.  It appears the only damage was to the clear plastic rear left tail light cover which was broken.  No note was left on the vehicle and no witnesses have come forward.

Thefts:

On April 14th police received a report that sometime overnight on April 12th an unknown person carefully removed the driver side motorized mirror from a BMW that was parked in a private driveway on Weald Rd.

On April 17th at approximately 11:20 am an unknown male was observed fishing an envelope out of a mail slot associated to a business in the 2000 blk of Cadboro Bay Rd.  The male appeared to be in his 30’s, had sandy blonde hair, and a goatee.  He was wearing sunglasses that were propped up on his head, a blue hoodie and carrying a black satchel that was slung over his right side.  If anyone has any information regarding this theft please contact the Oak Bay Police at 250-592-2424 or Crime Stoppers.

Fraud:

Police received a report of an attempted online Fraud.  The complainant received a call from the Bank of Nova Scotia advising him of a suspicious transaction.  The bank advised that a transfer had been made from one of their accounts to another, and then to a Canada Post Visa, which is a reloadable prepaid credit card.  The transaction raised concerns at the bank and they contacted the complainant who confirmed their suspicions.  The transaction was reversed and fortunately no money was lost.  It is not known where the fraudulent transaction originated from.

Traffic Enforcement:

While conducting speed enforcement in the 3300 block of Henderson Road on April 16th a vehicle was stopped for speeding.   While speaking with the driver, the investigating officer noted a moderate odour of liquor emanating from the driver’s breath and from the interior of the vehicle.  The driver also showed signs of having consumed liquor.  The driver provided samples of his breath suitable for analysis using a road side screening device and as a result of the readings they were issued a 3 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for 3 days.

During the week of April 14th to the 20th, Oak Bay Police officers conducted a series of enforcement projects on Oak Bay Avenue focusing on distracted driving and the use of cell phones while driving. Several violation tickets were issued for using an electronic device while driving, as well as failing to wear a seatbelt and some cycling violations.
