On April 28th, a motorist contacted the Oak Bay Police when he observed two motorcycles with passengers who were observed holding hands from bike to bike for half a city block. Those involved were contacted were contacted and advised of the complaint and warned of the dangers of holding hands when motorcycles are in motion and the potential for a collision.
Also on the 28th, another complaint was received about the “Microsoft Scam”. The victim of the scam unfortunately provided personal information and credit card details. When someone calls offering to repair your computer over the phone it is most likely a scam.
On April 30th, the Oak Bay Police received a call of a fight in progress between two women at the Oak Bay Recreation Center. When members arrived they discovered that one of the women involved in the “fight” was a victim of a theft that had been reported earlier. The woman was in the changing room of the recreation centre when she heard a distinctive ring from her cell phone mailbox coming from another changing room. The woman barged into the room where the ring was coming from and discovered young person sitting on a bench with all her possessions that had been reported stolen. A 19 year old woman was eventually located, arrested and released for a future court appearance.
Sometime overnight on April 30th in the 2000 block of Byron Street, somebody located a can of latex house paint and tossed on the front of the complainant’s house. The matter is still under investigation. If you have any information that could assist in identifying a suspect please contact the Oak Bay Police Department.
On May 2nd an explosion was heard on Hampshire Road at Oak Bay Avenue. The witness who heard the explosion also observed a manhole cover lifted off the ground and smoke coming out of the opening. Oak Bay Police and Fire attended the location to provide traffic control and secure the area. The cause of the explosion was a transformer and caused a loss of power to the area. No injuries were reported.
Also on May 2nd the Oak Bay Police were called to investigate a report of a surf board had been stolen on April 30th. The board was left unattended on the roof rack of a vehicle in the 2900 block of Beach Drive for about 3 hours. No suspects have been identified.
On May 3rd a patron of the Oak Bay Recreation Center left personal items in an unsecured shelf in the fitness room. The suspect made off with off with the articles that were on the shelf. No suspects have been identified.
This incident is one of many thefts at the Oak Bay Recreation Center where the victim fails to secure their possessions. People are reminded to LOCK UP their belongings!
Saturday May 10th is the official, national Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day. Some national advertising around this initiative claims that all police stations will have someone committed to accepting their prescription drugs if they want to drop them off, however all of the local police departments are choosing not to accept the drugs, but instead to direct individuals to take them to a nearby pharmacy and drop them off. Pharmasave on Oak Bay Avenue and the Estevan Pharmacy will both be accepting unused and expired pharmaceuticals for drop off.
