On August 26th an Oak Bay resident was the victim of a computer scam. The 76 yr old resident received a phone call from a male purporting to be from Microsoft who requested remote access to his computer to conduct repairs. The resident provided access and after a series of checks was asked to provide a credit card for billing purposes. A credit card number along with the PIN number was provided. Fortunately, the resident had second thoughts shortly after completing the phone call and notified his bank and credit card company to cancel any transactions. This is a common scam and police urge great caution in providing personal information, banking or otherwise, over the phone and especially if you did not originate the phone call in the first place.
