During the week of February 17^th – 23^rd, 2014 the Oak Bay Police responded to 60 calls for assistance.

Motor Vehicle Incidents:

On February 19^th police responded to a motor vehicle incident at the intersection of Foul Bay Rd and Gibbs Rd.  The driver of the vehicle was turning right and struck a cyclist, a 38 year old male who resides in Westshore.  Thankfully the cyclist only received minor injuries and the bike was not damaged.  The driver of the vehicle, an 18 year old female who resides in North Saanich, was issued a violation ticket for “Drive without Consideration” contrary to section 144(1)(b) of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Theft’s:

On February 21^st police received a report that an unknown person entered an insecure vehicle, sometime during the night, in the 2000 blk of Milton St.  It appears on loose change was taken.

During the same night an unknown culprit stole a homemade bench that was located on the front porch of a residence in the 2000 blk of Goldsmith St.  The bench is described as being 4 feet by 2 feet and is made of solid wood.

Traffic Enforcement:

During regular traffic enforcement on February 17^th at approximately 10:30pm a vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed in the 3400 blk of Henderson Rd.  The officer activated the radar unit and obtained a reading of 89 km/h in the posted 40 km/h zone. The driver, a 17 year old male who resides in Saanich, was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and his vehicle was impounded for 7 days.

Police have the authority to take a vehicle off the road and impound it in a storage lot at the owner’s expense.  In additional to excessive speeding here are other reasons where your vehicle can be impounded:

• Impaired driving
• Driving while unlicensed
• Driving while suspended or prohibited
• Street racing or performing a stunt, and
• Being improperly seated on a motorcycle

Depending on the offence a vehicle can be impounded for 3, 7 or 30 days.
