The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 74 calls for service this past week.
April 17, 2023 – Good Samaritan returns wallet to owner (file 23-978)
A good Samaritan returned a found wallet to the OBPD front desk staff, and efforts were made to locate the owner of the property. The owner and wallet were reunited without incident. Thank you to the honest finder for doing the right thing.
April 18, 2023 – Scooter with no Insurance (file 23-991)
A proactive officer was conducting patrols in the 1700 Block of Cedar Hill X Road on April 18, 2023, at approximately 1:00PM, when a person on a motorized scooter was stopped and investigated for operating the vehicle without active insurance. The driver was charged with driving without insurance which is a $598.00 fine under the Motor Vehicle Act. OBPD is reminding vehicle owners and drivers to check insurance documentation on their vehicles.
April 21, 2023 – Break and Enter Solved (23-1016)
At 2:00am in the 1200 Block of Beach Drive, homeowners were startled to find a stranger in the lower living room of their home. The man made entry through the unlocked sliding door, and immediately fled on foot when confronted by the homeowners. Nothing was stolen or damaged by the suspect. West Shore RCMP K9 attended; however officers were unable to get a track. A few hours later Oak Bay Police Officers located the suspect male, and it was learned that the man who had entered the house had mistaken which home he had intended to enter. The homeowners were pleased the male suspect was located and identified and did not wish to pursue any charges. OBPD reminds homeowners that motion sensing lights, cameras, and ensuring all doors are locked will help prevent similar incidents from occurring.
April 21, 2023 – Relative Impersonation Fraud (23-1018)
OBPD received a fraud call, where the victim was contacted via text message by a fraudster pretending to be the victim’s adult child. The fraudster claimed they needed funds to pay outstanding bills and was contacting them on a different number due to cell phone issues they were experiencing. The victim sent two e-Transfers totaling close to $3000.00. This investigation is ongoing.
April 22, 2023 – Trespassing in dwelling under Construction (file 23-1028)
OBPD responded to the 1200 Block of Beach Drive for a report of a male squatting in a unit under construction. Upon arrival, the unit was cleared by officers and the male was not found. A possible identification of the suspect was provided by a witness. This investigation is ongoing.
April 22, 2023 – Mischief (file 23-1026)
OBPD attended the seawall at McNeil Bay for reports of mischief to property, namely, new Graffiti markings with a tag date of April 20, 2023. Suspects have yet to be identified. Photographs were taken and the Graffiti was reported for removal. The investigation is still on-going.
