Weekly Media Release for April 1 – April 7, 2024

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 62 calls for service this week.

Excessive Speed

On April 3, 2024, at 9:16pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed on Beach Dr. near Newport Ave., which is a posted 40km/hr. speed limit. Police observed a vehicle travelling Northbound and noted it to be travelling more than 40km/hr. A Radar speed device was used to capture the speed of the vehicle and it was travelling 89km/hr. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 17-year-old male. The male was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368, and his parent’s vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. His parent attended the scene and picked up his son. Excessive Speed / Possession of a Forged Document

Later that same evening, on April 3, 2024, at 9:16pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed on Beach Dr. near Newport Ave., which is a posted 40km/hr. speed limit. Police observed a vehicle travelling Northbound and noted it to be travelling more than 40km/hr. A Radar speed device was used to capture the speed of the vehicle and it was travelling 83km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 17-year-old male. During the interaction, police observed a second driver’s licence in the teen’s possession. The teen produced the Alberta driver’s licence, which was in his likeness, and police noted that the date of birth was different than that of his British Columbia driver’s licence. A check of the Alberta driver’s licence confirmed that it was a forged document. The teen admitted to police that it was a “fake ID” that he used to enter a bar. The Alberta licence was seized, and the teen was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. The teen was warned regarding the possession of a forged document. His parent attended the scene and picked up his son. (OB24-830)

Excessive Speed

On April 4, 2024, at 9:00pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed on Beach Dr. near Newport Ave., which is a posted 40km/hr. speed limit. Police observed a vehicle travelling Northbound and noted it to be travelling more than 40km/hr. A Laser speed device was used to capture the speed of the vehicle and it was travelling 85km/hr. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 19-year-old female. The teen was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368, and her parent’s vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB24-836)
