The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 75 calls for service this week.
Traffic Complaint
The Oak Bay Police received a complaint regarding cyclists riding two or more abreast within the Municipality of Oak Bay. The driver was unable to safely pass the cyclists which resulted in traffic congestion and the cyclists causing an obstruction, preventing the free flow of vehicle traffic. Cyclists are reminded to ride single file and to follow the rules of the road. Cyclists failing to adhere to riding single file can be subject to the offence of Riding two or more abreast in a roadway Section 183(2)(d) MVA, with a fine of $109. (OB24-726)
Theft from Motor Vehicles
On March 26, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received two reports of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the 2100 block of Allenby Street. Sometime overnight the suspect(s) gained access to the vehicles through unlocked doors and stole wallets which contained credit cards and other identification from both vehicles. The suspect(s) then travelled to Victoria and fraudulently used the stolen credit cards. Neither theft was witnessed, nor were they captured on video. The fraud investigations are being investigated by the Victoria Police. (OB24-732 & 737)
On March 27, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a theft from an unlocked motor vehicle in the 3000 block of Uplands Rd. Sometime overnight the suspect(s) entered an unlocked vehicle and stole sunglasses. The incident was not witnessed or captured on CCTV. (OB24-747)
Break and Enter
On March 28, 2024, at 9:50am, the Oak Bay Police responded to a break and enter in the 1600 block of Wilmot Place. The complainant advised that they were upstairs when someone entered the residence through the unlocked back sliding door and stole a laptop (valued at $1400). This occurred while the homeowners were upstairs in the home. The matter is still under investigation. (OB File 24-761)
Distracted Driving Month
March was the annual Road Safety BC Distracted Driving Month. The Oak Bay Police were out during March, conducting traffic enforcement specifically aimed at distracted driving. During the month of March, the Oak Bay Police issued 58 Violation Tickets of those 28 were issued for using an Electronic Device while Driving Section 214.2(1) MVA with a fine of $368. The Oak Bay Police continue to remind drivers to leave their phones alone while behind the wheel.
