Weekly Media Release for April 15 to April 21, 2024

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 61 calls for service this week.

Theft

On April 15, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a theft of bicycle. The 15-year-old complainant locked their bicycle up at the Oak Bay High School and when they returned the bicycle was gone. On April 19, 2024, the complainant called back and advised their father was driving down Pandora St and saw a man in possession of the bicycle. The father politely asked for the bicycle back. The bicycle was returned to the father without incident and bicycle was confirmed to be one and the same with the serial number provided.  Police encourage the public to contact police prior to taking criminal matters into their own hands. The identity of the person who stole the bicycle is still unknown.  Estimated value of the bicycle is $800.00. (OB File 24-920)

Special Event

On April 16, 2024, the Oak Bay Police Community Support Section ran the Youth Drop-in Center for the Oak Bay Recreation Center at the Neighborhood Learning Centre at 2121 Cadboro Bay Rd. The center has foosball, table tennis, billiards, computers and a television available. Police played two very close games of foosball with local youth, winning one and losing one. The drop-in with police is available every Tuesday 12:00pm to 1:00pm. (OB File 24-937)

Traffic Complaint / Excessive Speed

On April 17, 2024, at approximately 3:00pm, the Oak Bay Police received a complaint of vehicles speeding and excessive vehicle noise around Newport Ave and Beach Dr. Police subsequently went to the area to conduct enforcement. At 3:44pm, a vehicle was observed travelling Northbound on Beach Dr near Newport Ave and was going very fast. A Laser speed device was used to target the vehicle and it registered a speed of 92km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 21-year-old man. The man was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368 and Fail to Produce Driver’s Licence S. 33(1) MVA $81 and his parents Honda CR-V was towed and impounded for 7 days.
