The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 65 calls for service this week.

Break and Enter / Possession of an Imitation Weapon
On April 23, 2024, at 7:41pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of an in-progress break and enter to a residence in the 300 block of Beach Dr. The witness advised that a male was breaking into the home and was in possession of a firearm. Police arrived at the home and observed the male through the window. Police gave verbal commands to the male at which point he followed police direction and was arrested for break and enter. The male had broken a window beside the front door to gain access to the home. Police searched the home and located an imitation gun (BB gun) by the front door. The male was held in custody for a bail hearing the following morning. A 57-year-old male is charged with Break and Enter S. 348(1)(a) Criminal Code, Possession of an Imitation Firearm S. 88(1) Criminal Code and Mischief Under $5000 S. 430(4)(b). He was released on a Release Order and is scheduled to appear in court on May 15, 2024. (OB File 24-999)

Excessive Speed
On April 24, 2024, at 3:30pm, police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave, which is a posted 40km/h zone. A vehicle was observed travelling Northbound on Beach Dr. near Newport Ave and was noted to be going fast. A Laser speed device was used to target the vehicle and it registered a speed of 90km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 17-year-old male. The teenager was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368 and his vehicle, a Mitsubishi Lancer was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB File 24-1003)

Fraud
On April 25, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a fraud. The complainant advised they received a call from an “Agent at CIBC”, who told them that fraudulent charges had been noted on their account. The agent advised the complainant to withdraw $5000 and deposit the money into a bitcoin account. The Agent advised the
complainant that $8000 would be deposited into their account. The complainant checked their bank account after depositing the money and realized they had been defrauded the money. The matter is still under investigation. (OB File 24-1017)

Theft – Shoplifting
On April 27, 2024, at 9:25am, the Oak Bay Police responded to a report of a theft at a business in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. Staff advised that a female entered the store and stole several items and left the store. Staff attempted to follow the female however, lost sight of her in a nearby yard. Police cleared the yard and located a garbage bag containing nearly $900 worth of stolen merchandise from the store. The female is described as 5’7”, dark hair, black jacket, black pants and holding a black leather bag. The matter is still under investigation. (OB File 24-1028)

Excessive Speed
On April 27, 2024, at 11:15pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave, a posted 40km/h zone. A vehicle was observed traveling Southbound and appeared to be going 85km/h. A Laser speed device was used, and it registered a speed of 81km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 20-year-old woman. The woman was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368 and his BMW 328i was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB File 24-1036)
