Weekly Media Release for Aug. 13 to Aug. 20, 2023

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 108 calls for service this week.

Theft of Electric Bicycles
On August 13 at 11:12 am, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a theft of two e-bikes overnight in the 2200 block of Central Ave. The resident reported that the two e-bikes were last seen the night before around 9:30 pm. The e-bikes had been left unlocked under side porch. The value of the bikes is approx. $7000. The first bike was a grey Trek Brand with yellow handles and a fly fishing sticker on it. The second was a blue Cube brand model Tour Hyper-pro500. (OBPD-2023-2397)

Break and Enter
On August 14, 2023 at 9:55am, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a break and enter in the 800 block of Victoria Ave. The complainant reported finding a window open and several plants that were knocked over. Nothing was reported stolen or damaged at the time of the report. This file is still under investigation. (OBPD file 2023-2412)

Break and Enter to a Business.
On August 16, 2023 at 1:10am, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a break and enter in the 1100 block of Beach Drive. Check of the CCTV cameras revealed that a Caucasian male, approximately 25-30 years old, with short brown hair and wearing a red shirt and black pants, made entry into the building. The suspect was observed on a red bike leaving the scene with a garbage can containing approximately $200 of beer, food, candy bars, and ice cream. This file is still under investigation. Break and Enter
On August 16, 2023 at 6:55am, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a break and enter in the 800 block of Victoria Ave. The complainant reported finding a gate open and property strewn on the ground. The suspect accessed the property by prying open a window. The suspect stole two Apple iPads with charging cables, a silver hand trolly, two large speaker towers and an electronic mixing board. The iPads were recovered a short distance away along the pathway to the west of the building. Total estimated value of loss $1750.00. (OBPD file 2023-2448)

Mischief Under $5000.00
On August 16, 2023, at 1:45 pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a suspicious male who appeared to have stolen property with him around the area of Victoria Ave and McNeil Ave. Officers attended the area and briefly observed the male on a red bicycle but were unable to locate him after an extensive search. The suspect left behind a shopping cart that contained electronic equipment, food and candy bars that was reported stolen earlier that morning from two different locations. The property has been returned to the owners. A potential suspect has been identified and the matter is still under investigation. (OBPD-2023-2455)

Break and Enter
On Friday August 18, 2023, at 10:00 am, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a break and enter in the 2000 block of Crescent Rd. The resident reported that they had tools stolen. The suspect entered the residence by prying a window open. Earlier that morning another resident reported that they had seen a male pulling a large green garbage bin full of tools. The male was wearing a grey hooded jacket and black pants and walking a distinct “low rider” bicycle with white wall tires. He was last seen walking west bound on Crescent Rd toward Foul Bay Road. Impaired Driving
On Saturday August 19, 2023, at 1:10 pm, an Oak Bay Police Officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle being driven erratically. The officer observed that the driver had difficulty maintaining their speed and would stop short at the stop signs. The officer subsequently stopped the vehicle and detected a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage from the driver. The driver provided a breath sample roadside and subsequently blew a “fail” on an Approved Screening Device. As a result, the 48-year-old male driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and their vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days. The driver also received two violation tickets for Liquor in Motor Vehicle contrary to LCLA 76(2) – fine $230, and Adult Operating vehicle While in Personal Possession of Cannabis contrary to CCLA 81(1)(a) – fine $230.
