Impaired Driving by Drug
In December 20, 2023, at approximately 7:25pm Police were conducting a counterattack road check on Beach Dr near Newport Ave. A vehicle traveling Southbound attempted to evade the road check and turned into the golf course maintenance parking and pulled over by Police. Police detected an overwhelming smell of burnt marijuana on the driver and observed signs of impairment by cannabis. Police made a Standard Field Sobriety Test demand. The 28-year-old driver performed poorly, and police formed the opinion that the driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was affected by a drug. Police located an opened package of cannabis behind the seat of the passenger seat in arms reach of the driver. The driver was issued a 215 – 24-hour driving Prohibition, a Violation Ticket for Drive with Cannabis in the vehicle ($230). The driver was also issued a 3-month driving prohibition as per direction on his licence from ICBC. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 24 hours. (OBPD File 2023-3823)
Breach of Conditions of Release/Outstanding Warrants
On December 22, 2023, at 1:36am Oak Bay Police were conducting patrols of Cattle Point and located a man wanted by Victoria Police on three warrants and he was found breaching conditions of his curfew. The 60-year- old man was arrested and transported to Victoria Police Department cells, where the warrants were executed. The man will be appearing in Court in February to answer to the new breach of conditions charges. (OBPD File 2023-3837)
Motor Vehicle Incident
On December 22, 2023, at 1:43pm Oak Bay Police were dispatched to a single Motor Vehicle roll over collision in the 2400 block of Cadboro Bay Rd. A Ford Escape travelling northbound struck a parked unoccupied Tesla causing the Ford to flip onto its roof.
The driver was extracted from the vehicle by Oak Bay Fire and transported by Ambulance to RJH with minor injuries. Police determined that alcohol and speed were not factors in the collision. The driver reported they may have experienced a medical episode that contributed to crash. This matter is still under investigation. (OBPD File 2023-3844)
No Vehicle Insurance
On December 22, 2023, at 7:37pm Police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave. A Northbound vehicle was observed speeding, travelling 66 km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was advised he was being stopped for speeding. The vehicle insurance expired 2023-11-03. Police issued a Violation ticket for No Insurance S 24(3)(b) MVA $598 and a verbal warning for the speed. The driver had the vehicle towed to their residence and received a ride home from the tow truck. (OBPD 2023-3850)
Excessive Speeding
On December 22, 2023, at 8:51pm Police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave, a posted 40km/h zone. A northbound vehicle was observed travelling in excess of the posted speed limit. A Lidar speed measuring device was used to capture the vehicle speed and it reached a stop speed of 107 km/h. A traffic stop was conducted the driver was issued a Violation Ticket for excessive speed S. 148(1) MVA $483 and a Notice of Vehicle Impoundment. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days.
