Weekly Media Release for Feb. 27 to Mar. 6, 2023

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 77 calls for service this week.

On March 2, 2023, at 5:15 pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of an attempted fraud. An Oak Bay resident reported someone purporting to be from Amazon had phoned, advising an order was placed from their account to purchase a computer in the United States. The “representative” from Amazon requested their banking information and their social insurance number which was provided. A family member overheard the conversation and hung up the phone recognizing it was a scam. The resident has contacted their bank and Equifax to report their banking information has been compromised. To date the resident has not sustained any monetary loss. (OBPD 2023-536)

On March 3, 2023, at 9:30am, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a break and enter to building in the 2000 block of Beach Dr. A municipal employee discovered a secure building  had been broken into and called police. The suspect removed a metal plate protecting the locking mechanism and pried the door open causing approximately $500.00 damage. Police located several personal items inside the building including a sleeping bag, bicycle, and identification. A suspect has been identified and charges are being sought for mischief under $5000.00 and two counts of breach of probation. (OBPD 2023-535)

On March 3, 2023, at 12:42 pm, the Oak Bay Police Department responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle in the 2100 block of Granite St. The owner reported their car had been broken into over night and several items were stolen including a first aid kit and a backpack. There was no damage to the car and owner was unsure if they had locked the vehicle overnight. Estimated value of loss $100.00. (OBPD 2023-548)

On March 3, 2023, at 4:15pm, the Oak Bay Police Department responded to a break and enter to a business in the 1100 block of Beach Dr. The complainant reported an employee discovered a break in to building at the rear of the property. The suspect stole several bottles of alcohol valued at $500.00. There was no damage to the building. A suspect has not been identified.  This matter is still under investigation. (OBPD 2023-552)
