Weekly Media Release for Jan. 16 to Jan. 22, 2023

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 56 calls for service this week.

On January 16, 2023, at 8:30am, the Oak Bay Police responded to a report of a theft from auto in the 2900 Block of Henderson Rd. The complainant reported their vehicle had been broken into sometime over the weekend. The suspect stole $100.00 in cash and $150.00 in gift cards. (OB 2023-139)

On January 16, 2023, at 2:10pm, the Oak Bay Police responded to a report of mischief in the 1900 Block of Bee St. The complainant reported a bus owned by the Municipality of Oak Bay had the fuel filler line tampered with and gas appeared to have been stolen. On January 19th, a municipal employee reported that a second vehicle had its fuel siphoned from the same location. Upon further inspection, it was discovered that the gas tank had been drilled and the fuel was drained from under the vehicle, resulting in approximately $250.00 in damage. This investigation is ongoing. (OB 2023-144 and OB 2023-171)

On January 17, 2023, at 10:50 am, Oak Bay Police responded to a report of mischief to property. Graffiti had been discovered at the Monterey Recreation centre located in the 1400 Block of Monterey Ave. The complainant reported someone had etched a graffiti tag into the glass door at the centre. The damage was estimated at approximately $500.00. No suspects have been identified in this file. (OB2023-169)

On January 20, 2023, at 11:47 pm, an Oak Bay Police officer was conducting traffic enforcement along Cadboro Bay Road. While conducting enforcement a vehicle was observed travelling south bound on Cadboro Bay Road at over 90km/h in a 40km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped and the 26-year-old male driver of the vehicle was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed under S.148(1) for $368.00, a violation ticket for failing to display “L” sign, Sec 30.10(2) for $109.00 and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. Additionally, the “L” driver provided a sample of his breath roadside and was subsequently issued a 12-hour driving prohibition, as “L” and “N” drivers are subject to “Zero” alcohol restriction on their licence. On January 20, 2023, at approximately 11:41pm, an Oak Bay Police Department officer was conducting speed enforcement on Foul Bay at Newton St. The officer observed a vehicle travelling northbound at a high rate of speed. The officer observed the Lidar (Laser) showed the vehicle was travelling at 73 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone. The officer pulled the vehicle over and while speaking to the male driver detected a smell of alcohol on his breath. A roadside breath demand resulted in the 50-year-old man being issued a 90-day IRP (Immediate Roadside Prohibition) licence suspension, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days. The driver was issued $196.00 dollars in fines for speeding, under S 146(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act. (OB 2023-190)
