Weekly Media Release for July 12 – July 18, 2021

On Monday, July 12th, a patrol member was conducting traffic enforcement in the 1700 block of Foul Bay Road and stopped a 2002 grey BMW 325Ci for insurance validity. Police records showed that the 23-year-old male driver was required to be served a 5- month driving prohibition pursuant to section 93 (1)(a)(ii) of the motor vehicle act. The driver was issued the prohibition.

On Monday, July 12th, a patrol member observed two different licence plates on 1992 red Mazda MX5. A traffic stop was conducted at Oak Bay Avenue and Yale Street. The front licence plate did not have valid insurance and the rear plate had insurance. The 79-year-old male driver was issued two violation tickets. One for no insurance with a prescribed fine of $598.00 and the other ticket was for wrong number plate with a fine of $109.00. The licence plates were seized, and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

On Friday, July 16th, a patrol member observed a 2009 brown Honda Civic speeding in the 3200 block of Henderson Road. The 28-year-old driver was stopped for speeding. The officer noted liquor indicia from the driver and an ASD was administered which showed a “FAIL” reading. The driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impoundment.

On Friday, July 16th, patrol members conducted a roadblock on Beach Drive. A 2015 black Nissan Leaf approached the roadblock and one of the patrol members observed a marijuana bong between the driver’s legs. The 21-year-old driver was given a Standard Field Sobriety Test for drugs and he failed the test. The driver was arrested for impaired driving by drug, provided with his charter of rights and a drug recognition expert demand. The officer formed the opinion that the driver was impaired by cannabis. The driver was transported to the Oak Bay Police Department where a urine demand was read, and a sample collected. A drug recognition report was completed to be forwarded to Crown Counsel for charge approval. The driver was also issued a 24-hour prohibition and violation tickets for no driver’s licence with a fine of $276.00 and cannabis in the vehicle with a fine of $230.00.

On Saturday, July 17th, another roadblock was conducted on Beach Drive. A 2014 white Honda Odyssey approached the roadblock and the driver appeared to nervous. The 48-year old female driver admitted to consuming one alcoholic drink. An ASD was administered and which showed a digital reading of “49”. The driver was issued a 24-hour prohibition notice and her driver’s licence was seized.

On Sunday, July 18th, a 2006 grey Nissan SUV approached the roadblock at the same location. The officer detected an odour of liquor emanating from the driver’s breath. An ASD was administered which showed a “WARN” reading. The 55-year-old male driver was issued a 3-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 3 days. The driver was also issued a violation ticket for no driver’s licence with a fine of $276.00.
