Weekly Media Release for June 17 – June 23, 2024

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 77 calls for service this week.

No Insurance

 On June 18, 2024, at 8:33 am, the Oak Bay Police were on patrol around Cadboro Bay Rd and Tod Rd, when a vehicle was observed to be speeding in the 30km/h school zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as an 81-year-old woman. The vehicle insurance has also expired in November 2023. The driver was issued a Violation Ticket for No Insurance S. 24(3)(b) MVA $598, and her vehicle was towed. A Warning was issued for the speeding. (OB 24-1526)

Business Break and Enter

On June 23, 2024, at 2:51 pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report a break and enter to a business in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. The suspect broke a window on the rear door. The suspect appears to have taken documents that would be of no value. Police located a drug pipe and a baggie suspected to contain drugs on the floor of the business. The Saanich Police Forensic Identification Section attended and processed the scene. The matter is still under investigation. (OB 24-1583)

Immediate Roadside Prohibition

On June 21, 2024, at 11:00 pm, the Oak Bay Police were on patrol around Beach Dr and Ripon Rd and observed a vehicle travelling 65 km/h in the posted 40km/h zone. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 42-year-old man. Police noted a strong odour of alcoholic beverage on the man’s breath and read the Approved Screening Device Demand. The man provided a suitable sample resulting in a reading of a Warn (a warn indicates that the driver’s blood alcohol level is between 60 – 99 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood). The man was issued a three-day Immediate Driving Prohibition, and his vehicle was impounded for three days. (OB 24-1567) 

Excessive Speed

On June 23, 2024, at 10:11 pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave, this is a posted 40km/h zone. Police observed a vehicle travelling Northbound and it appeared as though the vehicle turned off. Police then noted that the vehicle had continued Northbound but had turned its headlights off. The vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed and was locked in on the Radar going 94km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as an 18-year-old man. The man was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368, Drive without illuminated lamp S. 4.01 MVA Regs $109 and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB 24-1586)
