The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 87 calls for service this week.
Break and Enter
On June 25, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a break and enter in the 1000 block of Transit Rd. The complainant reported that sometime overnight on June 19, suspects entered the detached garage and stole a Rockwood Devinci Altus 9 bicycle valued at $1000.00, a Ralph S-XC2 bicycle valued at $1300, an Evercross e-scooter valued at $700.00 and a black fold up e-scooter valued at $600.00. Theft
On June 28, 2024, at 2:30am, the Oak Bay Police received a report that several vehicles had been entered around Sandowne Rd and Oakdowne Rd. The vehicles were all left with the doors and trunks open. In total 5 vehicles were entered and stolen from the vehicles were a wallet, containing identification, credit cards and money. One of the credit cards was used at a McDonald’s in Saanich. Saanich Police attended the McDonald’s and observed on surveillance video three teenagers passing around a card to make purchases. The matter is still under investigation. (OB File 24-1637)
Excessive Speed
On June 28, 2024, at 9:23pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave, this is a posted 40km/h zone. Police observed a vehicle travelling Northbound when the engine suddenly roared, and the vehicle accelerated rapidly. The vehicle was estimated to be going 80km/hr., and locked in on the LiDAR at 96km/hr. A traffic stop was conducted on the 1965 Chevrolet Impala, and the driver was identified as a 43-year-old male. The man was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB 24-1651)
Excessive Speed
On June 28, 2024, at 10:02pm, nearly a minute after the tow truck had left from the above excessive speeder, the Oak Bay Police continued conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave, a posted 40km/h zone. Police observed a vehicle travelling Northbound at a high rate of speed and was locked in on the LiDAR going 104km/h. A traffic stop was conducted on the 2004 Infiniti G35, and the driver was identified as a 19-year-old male. The man was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $483, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB 24-1652)
24 Hour Prohibition
On June 28, 2024, at 10:11pm, the Oak Bay Police were conducting a joint roadblock with the Saanich Police Department around Richmond Rd. A vehicle drove up to the Oak Bay Police officer and they immediately noted a strong odour of burnt cannabis. The male driver had indicia that was consistent with having smoked cannabis. The driver was identified as a 20-year-old man. The officer formed the opinion that the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was affected by a drug. The man was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 24 hours. (OB File 24-1653)
24 Hour Prohibition
On June 28, 2024, at 11:40pm, the Oak Bay Police continued the joint roadblock with the Saanich Police Department around Richmond Rd. A vehicle drove up to the Oak Bay Police officer and they immediately noted a strong odour of burnt cannabis. The officer observed a burning cannabis joint in the vehicle. The male driver stated that he “just smoked a joint and was planning on smoking one more on the drive home”. The driver was identified as a 63-year-old man. The Standardized Field Sobriety Test demand was made, and the man performed poorly. The officer formed the opinion that the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was affected by a drug. The man was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and a Violation Ticket for Adult Operate a Motor Vehicle in Personal Possession of Cannabis S. 81(1)(a) $230 and his vehicle was impounded for 24 hours. Warrant / Breach Conditional Sentence Order
On June 29, 2024, at 8:30am, the Oak Bay Police were on patrol in the 1800 block of Beach Dr. Police observed a cyclist riding on the sidewalk and who was also not wearing a helmet. Police conducted a traffic stop of the cyclist and identified the cyclist as a 37-year-old man. Police learned that the man had a warrant for his arrest out of Prince George for Possession of a Prohibited Weapon. The man was arrested and searched incidental to his arrest for weapons. Police located multiple knives, a baton, a replica firearm and plastic knuckles. The man was bound by a Conditional Sentence Order in which he was not to possess any imitation firearms. The man was transported to Saanich Police cells and held for court. (OB File 24-1657)
