Weekly Media Release for June 4 – June 11, 2023

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 105 calls for service this past week.

2023-1561  Theft

On June 5th, Oak Bay Police responded to a report of a theft in the 300 block of King George Terrace. The resident reported a blue bag containing five Bill Reid gold embossed indigenous art prints were stolen from the driveway of their residence. The theft occurred on June 4th between 10:00 am to 10:30 am. Estimated value of loss $650.00. No suspects or witnesses have been identified. There was no video surveillance available in the area.

2023-1560  Non-fatal motor vehicle collision

On June 5, at 2:26 pm, the Oak Bay Police were assisting the Oak Bay Fire Department at the scene of a fire at the intersection of Oak Bay Ave and Monterey Ave. Officers were conducting traffic control away from the scene when a slow-moving vehicle, making a left-hand turn onto Monterey Ave., struck a police officer on their arm knocking them to the ground. The officer sustained minor injuries (scrapes and bruising) and was assessed at the scene by paramedics. The officer was relieved of their duties for the remainder of their shift. At the time of the incident officers were wearing high visibility vests. A violation ticket for drive with out due care and attention will be issued to the 29-year-old female driver.

2023-1584 Drive with no insurance

On June 7th, Oak Bay Police were near Beach Dr. and King George Terrace conducting traffic enforcement when an officer observed a vehicle approaching them. A check on the insurance status of the vehicle determined the vehicle had not been insured since October 2022. The vehicle was stopped, and the registered owner of the vehicle was issued a violation ticket for driving without insurance and issued a $598.00 fine.

2023-1587- Theft from motor vehicle

On June 7th, at 9:30 pm, the Oak Bay Police responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle in the 3000 block of Finnerty Rd. The owner reported they had parked their vehicle at approximately 6:00pm and upon returning, found the rear passenger window broken and a Dell laptop had been stolen from the vehicle. To date, no suspect has been identified.

2023-1616- Fraud

On June 9th, the Oak Bay Police responded to a report of a fraud in the 2000 block of Cadboro Bay Road. The resident reported they were going through their bank statements and noticed they had over 20 fraudulent transactions on their account and close to $4000.00 had been withdrawn. Their bank was notified, and an internal investigation has started. This matter is on-going.

2023-1638- Impaired driving.

On June 11th at approximately 12:44 am, Oak Bay Police observed a vehicle speeding westbound on Oak Bay Ave. Officers conducted a traffic stop near Oak Bay Ave and Jubilee Ave. Upon speaking with the 26-year-old “N” driver, police detected the smell of alcohol coming from his breath. The driver provided a breath sample roadside and subsequently blew a “warn” on an Approved Screening Device.  As a result, the driver was issued a 3-day immediate roadside probation and the driver’s vehicle was towed and impounded for 3 days. The driver was issued a violation ticket for Drive Contrary to Restrictions ($109) under the Motor Vehicle Act.
