The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 70 calls for service this week.
Driving Prohibition
On May 17, 2024, at 12:15pm, the Oak Bay Police responded to assist the Saanich Police with a possible impaired driver. The witness advised that the driver of a Dodge Caravan was smoking cannabis while driving. The Oak Bay Police located the vehicle near the owner’s residence. The driver was identified as a 55-year-old man. The Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) demand was made. SFST is a series of three tests, consisting of the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test (this test checks a person’s eyes and is specifically looking for an involuntary jerking of the eye), Walk and Turn Test and One Leg Stand Test (these tests evaluate balance, coordination and the persons ability to divide their attention). Based on the results of the test, the man was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition under section 215 of the Motor Vehicle Act. (OB File 24-1208)
Special Event
On May 16, 2024, the Oak Bay Police assisted with the Oak Bay High School walk in support of the Moose Hide Campaign. The Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led movement to engage men and boys in ending violence towards woman and children. The Oak Bay Police provided an escort and traffic control for the approximate 100 students and teachers, as they walked along Bowker Creek trail, Monterey Ave, Oak Bay Ave and Elgin Rd, before returning to the school. The event was well received sparked conversations amongst the public and students. (OB File 24-1199)
Arson
On May 16, 2024, at 10:09pm, the Oak Bay Police received a call to assist the Oak Bay Fire Department with a report of couches on fire at the Cattle Point lookout. Police attended and the fire department had already extinguished the fire. Police noted two couches and one chair on the boat launch had been set on fire. The Fire Department advised several youths were seen fleeing the area as they arrived. The couches and chair appear to have been dumped at the lookout. The matter is still under investigation. Theft of Bicycle
On May 14, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of a theft of bicycle from the University of Victoria campus. The complainant advised they locked their electric bicycle up at the Bike Centre on March 1, 2024, and realized on May 14, 2024, that the bicycle had been stolen. The bicycle is described as a 2019 black Rad Power e-bike, valued at $2600. See attached photo. The matter is still under investigation. (OB File 24-1176)

No Insurance / No Driver’s Licence
On May 13, 2024, at 9:42pm, the Oak Bay Police were on patrol near the Oak Bay Marina. Police observed a Honda Civic and queried the licence plate, the query indicated that the insurance was expired and the registered owner’s driver’s licence had expired. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as the 74-year-old registered owner. The driver was aware that both his insurance and licence were expired. The driver was issued violation tickets for No Insurance S. 24(3)(b) MVA $598 and No Driver’s Licence S. 24(1) MVA $276. The vehicle was towed from the scene. (OB File 24-1169)
