The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 46 calls for service this week.

Fraud
On May 9, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report regarding a fraud. The complainant advised that they received an email from “Microsoft” advising that their account password needed to be reset. They clicked the link and then they were immediately locked out of their computer and phone. As of the report, the complainant had not lost any money and had been in contact with their bank and credit card companies. (OB File 1134)

Excessive Speed
On May 9, 2024, at 5:20pm, a member of the Oak Bay Police was conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr. near Newport Ave, a posted 40 km/h zone. The officer heard a loud engine roar and observed a vehicle Northbound that was travelling well above the posted speed limit. A Lidar was used to capture the speed of the vehicle and it was noted to be travelling 96km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 19-year-old male with a Novice Class 7 driver’s licence. The teenager was issued a violation ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $368, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB File 24-1136)

Excessive Speed
On May 11, 2024, at 7:44pm, once again, a member of the Oak Bay Police was conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr. near Newport Ave, a posted 40km/h zone. The officer observed a vehicle Northbound that was travelling well above the posted speed limit. A Lidar was used to capture the speed of the vehicle and it was noted to be travelling 116km/h. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver was identified as a 32-year-old man. The man was issued a violation ticket for Excessive Speed S. 148(1) MVA $483, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB File 24-1136)
