The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 89 calls for service this past week.

2023-1331  Motor Vehicle Collision

On May 17, 2023, at approximately 1:18am, Police received a report of a motor vehicle collision in the 100 block of Beach Drive. The caller reported they heard a crash outside their residence and went to see what had occurred. The caller reported they saw a Ford Escape SUV had collided with a parked Honda Civic and a man was observed running from the scene of the collision. Police attended the scene and during their investigation they were able to locate the registered owner of the Ford Escape SUV involved in the collision. The owner, a 32-year-old man, was issued a violation ticket for “failing to remain at the scene of an accident” under section 68(1) MVA which carries a $320.00 fine.

2023-1332  Impaired Driving

On May 17, 2023, at approximately 2:30am, Police were on scene at a hit and run collision investigation on Beach Drive (OBPD file 2023-1331), when an officer observed a vehicle come to a stop approximately 100 meters down the street from the scene. The officer approached the vehicle to speak with the occupants of the vehicle to see if they were involved in the original collision. As the officer spoke with the 38-year-old male driver, they detected an overpowering smell of alcohol on the driver’s breath and observed symptoms consistent with alcohol consumption. The driver was read an approved screening device demand, however he refused to provide a sample of his  breath. The man was arrested for refusing to provide a breath sample, was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

2023-1345  Impaired Driving

On May 17, 2023, at approximately 7:33pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a “possible impaired driver” near Beach Drive and Oliver St. The caller reported seeing two people in a parked car doing drugs. Officers attended the location and located a Honda Civic matching the description provided by the caller. As the officer approached the car, he observed a haze of smoke and the smell of fresh burnt cannabis coming from the passenger area of the car. A standardized field sobriety test was conducted on the 22-year-old-male driver. As a result of this investigation, the driver was issued a $500.00 violation ticket for consume cannabis while operating a vehicle contrary to CCLA 65(1)(a).  The driver’s license was seized for 24 hours, and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 24 hours.
