Weekly Media Release for Oct. 23 – Oct. 30, 2022

The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 75 calls for service this week.

On October 24, 2022, at 4:15pm, the Oak Bay Police received a report of an attempted fraud in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. The complainant reported that they received a phone call from someone saying that they were an employee from BC Hydro. The “employee” told them that their power would be turned off for overdue payments if they did make a payment within the next hour. A phone number to call and arrange payment was provided. The complainant called the number and spoke with an “employee” of BC Hydro who became aggressive when questioned about the account and where they could attend to pay the account. The complainant grew suspicious and hung up. The complainant called BC Hydro customer service who confirmed that it was a scam. No funds were lost in this file. (OBPD file 2022-3366)

On October 25, 2022, at approximately 7:57am, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a mischief to a vehicle in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. The complainant reported someone had broken a window to their 2008 Toyota Tundra. The complainant reported that nothing was stolen from their vehicle. No suspects have been identified in this file. (OBPD file 2022-3329)

On October 26, 2022, at approximately 8:50am, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a theft from automobile from the 900 block of Foul Bay Rd. The complainant reported their vehicle had been broken into overnight. The suspect stole a fanny pack containing identification, credit cards, bank cards and some jewelry. The value of the jewelry was not known. The victim managed to cancel the cards, except for one before it was used for a purchase $87.00. The victim’s identification and a credit card were located a short distance away from their home. No suspects have been identified in this file. (OBPD file 2022-3339)

On October 26, 2022, at 10:30am, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of a mischief to business in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. The complainant reported they found the deadbolt lock on their rear door had been tampered with or broken. Officers attended and did not find any evidence indicating the business had been entered. No additional damage was observed. There are no suspects identified in this file. (OBPD file  2022-3342)

On October 26, 2022, at 1141hrs, the Oak Bay Police Department received another report of a theft from automobile in the 2100 block of Haultain St. The complainant reported someone had entered their unlocked vehicle overnight and had stolen a credit card. The credit card was used at several locations in Victoria. This file is still under investigation. (OB file 2022-3344)

On October 26, 2022, at 1:30pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received another report of a theft from automobile in the 2000 block of Brighton Ave. The complainant reported they parked their vehicle on the street overnight and left it unlocked. Upon returning to it in the morning, they discovered their DeWalt power tools were stolen. The approximate value of the loss is estimated at $550.00. There are no suspects in this file. On October 27, 2022, at 12:51pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report of suspicious activity at the library in the 1400 block of Monterey Ave. The complainant reported a man was using tools to tamper with several laptops he had in his possession. From observing the man’s actions, the complainant believed the laptops may have been stolen. Police attended and spoke with the male and learned the man had warrants for his arrest for break and enter and failing to appear for court. The male was subsequently arrested and taken to cells on his outstanding warrants. Upon further investigation, it was confirmed the man had been in possession of laptops that were stolen from a break and enter reported earlier in the month. Additional charges are being sought against the man for possession of stolen property. Police will be returning the stolen laptops to the rightful owner. This file is still under investigation. Oak Bay Police are seeking assistance from the public to help identify a person of interest related to a theft of money. On October 30, 2022, the manager of a  business located on Oak Bay Ave. reported a theft of approximately $11,000.00 to  the Oak Bay Police. The cash was taken from a room inside the business that is intended for employees only. It is believed, the theft took place on October 28, 2022, at approximately 6:00pm. Video footage from within the business captures a man entering the premises and proceed directly to the room where the money was kept. The male, who is not an employee, then enters the room and departs a brief time later. The man is believed to be 40-45 years of age, Caucasian and bald. At the time of the incident the man was wearing a dark colored Olympic View Golf hat, black jacket and blue jeans. (Two photos of the person of interest  are attached).
