The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 98 calls for service this week.

Fraud

On October 29, 2024, the Oak Bay Police received a report of fraud. The complainant reported that they were selling an item on an online forum. A potential buyer contacted them via a messenger application, expressing interest in purchasing the item and offering to send an e-transfer. The complainant received an e-transfer through the app and attempted to sign into their bank, only to receive a message stating that the bank was not supported. Realizing they had likely been scammed, the complainant immediately contacted their bank and locked the account. The bank informed them that a withdrawal attempt had been made and they were working to stop the transaction. The complainant also contacted a local computer company to ensure their computer was not compromised. (OB File 24-3019)

Trespass

On November 2, 2024, at 10:21 PM, the Oak Bay Police received a report of an unwanted person at a business in the 1100 block of Beach Drive. Staff reported that a female was making racial comments toward employees and had been informed she was no longer welcome on the property. Police attended, but the female had already left. Officers contacted her by phone and reiterated that she was not welcome at the business.

On November 3, 2024, at 3:25 AM, the Oak Bay Police received another call from the same business, reporting that the female had returned and was harassing staff. Police attended, located the female on site, and informed her that she was being investigated for a Trespass Act offence. The female initially refused to identify herself and was subsequently arrested for obstruction. After her arrest, she provided identification. The 50-year-old woman was issued a Violation Ticket for Re-entering Premises under Section 2(3)(d) of the Trespass Act, with a fine of $115, and was released unconditionally regarding the obstruction investigation.
