Excessive Speed
November 5, 2024, 10:41 PM: Oak Bay Police were conducting speed enforcement on Beach Dr near Newport Ave, a posted 40 km/h zone. A northbound vehicle was observed traveling at 60 km/h, then accelerating to 93 km/h. The driver, a 19-year-old man, was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed (Section 148(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act) with a fine of $368. His Subaru Impreza was towed and impounded for 7 days. November 6, 2024, 1:15 AM: In the same area, police observed a northbound motorcycle rapidly accelerating to 100 km/h in the 40 km/h zone. The driver, a 21-year-old man, was issued a Violation Ticket for Excessive Speed (Section 148(1) of the Motor Vehicle Act) with a fine of $368. His Yamaha motorcycle was towed and impounded for 7 days. (OB File 24-3127)
Fraud
November 7, 2024: A report was received about a fraud involving a text message that appeared to be from the complainant’s bank. The complainant provided their banking information and later discovered four fraudulent payments totaling $799.96 to a business in Quebec. The investigation is ongoing. (OB File 24-3138)
November 8, 2024: Another fraud report was received involving a company claiming to connect clients with outstanding cryptocurrency assets. The complainant, who had previously invested in cryptocurrency, sent two e-transfers of $10,000 each. The investigation is ongoing. (OB File 24-3152)
No Insurance
November 9, 2024, 12:00 PM:Police observed a Land Rover Range Rover on Beach Dr near King George Terrace with an obstructed licence plate. The vehicle’s insurance had expired in August 2024. The 53-year-old male driver was issued a Violation Ticket for No Insurance (Section 24(3)(B) of the Motor Vehicle Act) with a fine of $598 and a warning for Illegible Licence Plate (Section 3.03 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations). The vehicle was towed from the scene. (OB File 24-3157)
Immediate Driving Prohibition
November 10, 2024, 5:17 AM:Police observed a vehicle with its lights on and engine running near the Oak Bay Marina. The driver, a 21-year-old woman with a class 7 Novice driver’s licence, had an odour of liquor on her breath. A breath sample indicated a “Warn” level of blood alcohol. She was issued a 7-day Immediate Driving Prohibition and a 4-month driving prohibition under Section 93(1)(a)(ii) of the Motor Vehicle Act. Her Kia Forte was towed and impounded for 7 days.
