Weekly Media Release June 1-7, 2015

On Monday, June 1 just before 11am, police received a report of the theft of a BMX bike from the bike racks of Oak Bay High School. The bike had been locked; however, the suspect used bolt cutters to cut the lock and ride away. Police have identified a suspect and will be investigating further.

At approximately 6 pm on Sunday, June 7th, police responded to the report of a naked man on Willows Beach near Cattle Point. The 46-year-old man claims to have believed that he had privacy when he chose to sunbath in the nude behind a pile of rocks. He was observed by a woman walking her dog. Upon being discovered, the male stood up and began acting in a very lewd fashion. The police were called and he was subsequently arrested for committing an indecent act. The investigation continues.

Shortly after 8 pm on Sunday, police responded to Oak Bay Avenue and Hampshire Road where two 12-year-old girls were approached by a male in his twenties who asked the girls some questions and offered them a ride in his car. The girls gave him no information, declined the ride, and ensured that they were in a busy, safe area and called police. The area was searched with negative results.  While the male was not immediately located, police are working to identify him. Neither of the girls felt threatened by the male and acted appropriately in their reporting their suspicions to police.

On Saturday, June 6 a $1000 bicycle was taken for a “test drive” from Oak Bay Bicycles and never returned. A report of theft was made to the Victoria Police Department. On Sunday, June 7th, an employee of the shop who had dealt with the bike thief on Saturday recognized him in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Avenue and called police again. OBPD attended and arrested the 22-year old resident of Victoria and liaised with VicPD. The male, who is well known to police for property crime offences, was released to appear in court at a future date.

The Friday night and Saturday of the Tea Party weekend were as uneventful as any in recent memory, and the whole weekend event was successful with no major issues.
