Weekly Media Release June 11, 2012

Week of June 3rd to June 10th, 2012

During the past week the Oak Bay Police Department responded to 109 calls for service.

There were five theft from vehicles reported over the week which occurred throughout the Municipality. The majority of these thefts occurred where the vehicles were left unlocked. It is recommended that you lock your vehicle and be sure to take all of your valuables with you.

On June 8th police responded to a report of a “rocket” that was found on a beach in south Oak Bay. The person who located the device immediately contacted police and did not touch the device. Police attended and located a Marine Location Marker and not a rocket. The Fleet Dive Unit out of CFB Esquimalt was contacted and they safely removed the device. These devices do find their way to our beaches and the public are asked not to touch or move them but to call their local police department.

On June 9th we received a report of an individual who was selling an item on UsedVictoria. A potential buyer contacted them and expressed interest in purchasing the item. The buyer then sent the seller a fake bank draft for a substantially larger amount. The buyer wanted the seller to cash the cheque and return the difference to them. This is a common scam and thankfully the seller did not fall for this one. If you are in a similar situation and you feel something is not right then trust your instincts.

Schools are quickly winding down for this year and there are a lot of excited children out there. Please take special care when driving through both school zones and playground zones.
