Weekly Media Release March 10-16, 2014

On March 10th a local 20 year old male foreign exchange student participated in an on-line relationship with a female who purported to be living in the Philippines. At some point in a live video call with the female, she asked the male to disrobe and she recorded the session, unbeknownst to the male.  She then went on to threaten to post the photos and video on the Internet and Facebook unless he wired money to her. He complied and is now out over $1,000.  The male has no idea who the female is, as she only posted a photo of a woman and claimed it was a photo of her. The public are reminded of the potential dangers of on-line relationships – the people you meet may not be whom they appear to be.

On March 10th at 10:33 pm OBPD investigated a single motor vehicle accident in which a driver swerved to avoid a collision with a deer on the roadway at Cattle Point, hitting some logs causing $3,000 damage to the vehicle and re-injuring a previous back surgery.

On March 13th at 11:20 am OBPD responded to a report of a domestic assault on Victoria Ave. An investigation led to the arrest of Mark HOSKIN, 39 years, who is charged with several criminal charges. The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries. Follow up investigation is on-going in coordination with the Regional Domestic Violence Unit.

On March 13th an Oak Bay resident brought a rifle and a shotgun in to the Oak Bay Police Department for destruction.  While the police are happy to assist citizens in destroying any unwanted firearms, we ask that you call us and we will be happy to attend your residence, rather than you transporting the guns to us.

On March 15th the driver of a north bound Pontiac Neon on Oliver St failed to yield to a westbound Chevy Cavalier on Central Ave, striking the driver side of the Cavalier, spinning it in the intersection.  The driver of the Neon was charged with failing to yield after leaving stop sign.

On March 15th a northbound Subaru swerved to miss an animal on the roadway in the 300 block of King George Terrace, crossing the south bound lane and striking the rock face.  The vehicle was totalled.  Fortunately, there were no injuries.

On March 16th at 1:57 am a car was stopped at an Impaired Driving check stop on Haultain St. The investigation lead to the 42 yr old female driver being issued a 90 Day driving prohibition and her car being impounded for 30 days.  Twenty minutes later, a 24 yr old female was stopped in the same location in a Toyota Corolla with both drivers’ side tires flat. Further investigations also lead to her being issued a 90 Day driving prohibition and her car being impounded for 30 days.  The cost to both women will be at least $1,500.  Please don’t drink and drive!

On March 16th OBPD investigated the overnight theft of several personal items as well as documents with personal information from an unlocked SUV in the 1700 block of Hampshire Rd.  Residents are once again asked to lock their vehicles at all times and do not leave any valuables or sensitive personal data inside – locked or not.

On March 16th an eastbound vehicle turned left into the path of westbound vehicle causing an accident that totalled both cars at the intersection of Lansdowne Rd and Foul Bay Rd.  The male driver of the westbound vehicle was treated at the scene b
