The Oak Bay Police Department responded to 77 calls for service that week.
On March 13th OBPD attended the 2800 block of Foul Bay Rd. for a report of a theft of an E-bike. Sometime overnight, unknown person(s) likely used a mechanical tool to cut the lock and steal the bike from the property. The E-bike is valued at $2000.00. A suspect was not identified. On March 14th a member of the public located a set of Airpods in the area of Lansdowne Rd. and Cadboro Bay Rd. and turned them in to OBPD. If you have lost your Airpods and can describe the case, which is marked with a first name, please contact Oak Bay Police so we can return your property. (OBPD file 2023-650)
On March 14th OBPD received a driving complaint of a vehicle not stopping at a stop sign in the area near Willows Elementary School during school time hours. Police are reminding motorists they need to be extremely mindful of their driving habits especially during school time hours. Stop means stop. Fail to obey a stop sign violation ticket comes with 3 points and $167.00 fine. (OBPD file 2023-652)
On March 15th OBPD officers were on routine patrol in the area of Foul Bay Rd and Haultain St. when they noticed a vehicle with a severely damaged windshield which was obscuring the vision of the driver. A traffic stop was conducted, and investigation revealed the driver was a prohibited driver. The 53-year-old male driver was arrested for prohibited driving and released at the scene with a court date in May. The vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded for seven days.(OBPD file 2023-656)
On March 17th OBPD attended the area of Cadboro Bay Rd and Eastdowne Rd.. for a report of a hit and run. A driver reported he was stuck from behind while stopped on Cadboro Bay Rd. The driver who struck him fled the scene on foot. The fleeing driver, a 29 year old woman, was later identified by the passenger and owner of the vehicle the suspect had been driving. There was extensive damage to both vehicles. The occupants of both vehicles reported minor injuries that did not require medical attention. The suspect driver has not yet been located. This matter is still under investigation. (OBPD 23-682).
On March 18th, between midnight and 2:00am, OBPD officers conducted a roadblock to check for sobriety of drivers following the St. Patrick Day Celebrations. Officers checked approximately 45 cars over two hours. Three roadside approved screening device tests were administered. As a result, one 18-year-old male driver “blew a warn” and was issued a 3-day driving prohibition and the vehicle he was operating was towed and impounded for 3 days.
On March 19th OBPD attended the 900 block of Beach Drive. For a report of a theft of an e-bike. Sometime overnight, unknown person(s) cut the lock and stole the bike from the property. This investigation is ongoing. Total value of theft $3000.00 (OBPD file 2023-705).
With the weather improving, Oak Bay Police would like to remind drivers to be aware of the increased cyclist and pedestrian traffic. Police also want to remind cyclists of their rights and duties after receiving several traffic complaints related to cyclists riding side by side on the roadway and impeding traffic.

183 (2) A person operating a cycle
(d) must not ride abreast of another person operating a cycle on the roadway,
“roadway” means the portion of the highway that is improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular traffic, but does not include the shoulder, and if a highway includes 2 or more separate roadways, the term “roadway” refers to any one roadway separately and not to all of them collectively;
“vehicle” means a device in, on or by which a person or thing is or may be transported or drawn on a highway, but does not include a device designed to be moved by human power, a device used exclusively on stationary rails or tracks, mobile equipment or a motor assisted cycle;
