Weekly Media Release for March 20th – 27th, 2023.

OBPD responded to 62 calls for service during this period.

On March 21, 2023, at approximately 10:03am, the Oak Bay Police received a report from a resident concerned about a man with a bicycle near the 800 block of St Patrick Street. Officers attended and located the man, who matched the description provided, who was riding a bicycle with no helmet, contrary to MVA 184(1).  Officers stopped and spoke with the 39-year-old man and subsequent police checks revealed the male was bound by a probation order with a condition to not carry any tools or instruments capable of use in criminal activity. The man was found to be in possession of such tools and was arrested for failing to comply with a probation order. Upon searching incidental to arrest, officers also located a folding pocketknife and several pieces of identification that did not belong to the man. The man was brought before a Judge and released on charges for Fail to Comply with Probation Order, contrary to CCC 733.1(1), and, Possession of Property obtained by Crime, contrary to CCC 354.(1), and released with additional probation conditions. On March 23, 2023, at 2:50pm, an Oak Bay Police Officer was enforcing traffic on Henderson Rd and checking for licensed drivers and insured vehicles and located a vehicle identified when they came upon a vehicle with no insurance. The officer conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the registered owner and checked the vehicle for insurance and learned the vehicle had not been insured since October 2022. The registered owner was issued Violation Ticket for no insurance. Section 24(3)(b) Drive without Insurance $598.00. (OB2023-745)

On March 23, 2023, at 5:45 pm, the Oak Bay Police Department received a report that three propane tanks had been stolen from outside a business in the 2000 block of Oak Bay Ave. The business owner reported the propane tanks were stolen sometime between March 19th and March 23rd. The tanks were white with a yellow label marked with “tank traders” on it. The tanks were worth $70.00 each. Suspect(s) have not been identified. (OB 2023-749)

On March 25, 2023, at 7:56pm, a resident reported they saw a group of teenagers in a red vehicle drive up to the municipal yard at the end of Goldsmith Ave and spray graffiti on the cinder block wall adjacent to the foot path. The group of teens is described as two males and one female who were seen leaving the parking lot via Goldsmith. Officers attempted to locate the suspects without success. No further description or details were available for the vehicle or suspected “taggers”. This investigation is on-going.  (OB2023-765)
